Shalash's Symbol

Shalash is one of the ten Heralds of The Almighty on Roshar. Her nickname is Ash. She was the Herald of Beauty and the patron of the Order of Lightweavers. She is also associated with the number Shash, the essence Blood, and the Divine Attributes of Creativity and Honesty.[1] She is also Jezrien's daughter.[2]

Appearance and Personality

Due to her abilities it is likely that she can change her appearance at will. As Baxil's mistress, Shalash has dark skin and long black hair. She has Shin-like eyes which are so strongly violet they are said to be nearly white and is tall and lean like an Alethi. She does not wear dresses or skirts but instead chooses tight trousers with a thin-bladed sword worn at her hip.[3]

Shalash seems to be a brutal and unforgiving person, as Av mentions to Baxil that he should only ask their mistress about why she destroys artworks depicting herself if he isn't too attached to his own limbs and wouldn't mind losing them.[3] Torol Sadeas mentions to Adolin that he had a "shalashian" temper, which apparently meant he was too impatient for a position such as being Highprince of Information.[4]

History

At one point in the past, Shalash and her father became Heralds in order to maintain the Oathpact. After 99 desolations[5], she and eight of the other heralds abandoned their post during Aharietiam.[6]

It is unknown where she had gone in the next 4,500 years, but at some point she began destroying statues and artworks commemorating her.

Just before assassinating King Gavilar, Szeth notices that Shalash's statue in the palace was conspicuously missing while the other nine heralds were represented.[7] It had been destroyed by Baxil's mistress.[8][9] The mistress is Shalash herself.[10]

Shalash mentions that her practice of destroying stone statues of herself would be far quicker and easier if she got herself a Shardblade, confirming she no longer possesses one.[3]

Shalash also breaks into the palace of the Prime in Azir in order to destroy statues and artwork depicting her.[3][11]

Shalash in other Religions

Shalash is known as Epan, the Lady of Dreams in Azir.[3]

Attributes and Abilities

Surgebinding

Shalash is a Surgebinder. As patron of the Order of Lightweavers it is likely she can bind the surges of Lightweaving and Soulcasting

Shalash is, like all other Heralds, immortal. It appears she has been mostly successful in keeping her wits about her after such a long time, unlike other Heralds shown in the series.[3][11]

Relationships

Jezrien

It is known that Jezrien was her father but it is not yet known what kind of relationship she had with him.

Minions

Like Nale, Shalash seems to hire several minions to aid her on her quest. She pays them well but Av mentions that she would turn violent against them quickly if one of them were to ever start prying too deeply into her motives.

Quotes

She was amazing. Wonderful, intoxicating, overwhelming.

Baxils thoughts on Shalash.[3]
