Hesina is a female darkeyes Alethi of the second nahn[2] on Roshar. She lives in Hearthstone with her husband, Lirin and her youngest son, Oroden.[1] She is also the mother of Kaladin and Tien.[3]

Hesina’s home is built on the outskirts of Hearthstone and is larger than the normal household building due to the inclusion of her husband's surgery room.[2]

Appearance and Personality

Hesina is a pretty darkeyed woman, with full lips, a narrow face and a bold chin.[3] She is tall and stands several fingers above her husband.[4][5] She has dark hair that is usually in a tail and wrapped in a kerchief.[4] Hesina often wears brown clothing, sometimes with a hint of color.[4][6] During the colder months, she wears a knitted hat over her kerchief and a long brown coat to keep warm.[4] Like many darkeyed women,[7] she covers her safehand with a glove as it is more practical.[8]

Hesina is quick witted and sharp tongued.[4] She is open minded[9] and wishes for her children to have a choice over their future Callings.[9] She is an eloquent speaker and expects the same of her children.[4]

Unlike the other mothers in the Hearthstone, Hesina rarely chastises her sons for odd behaviour and sometimes joins them.[9] She enjoys working around the town, cleaning buildings and removing crem, as she finds it a useful way to clear her head.[4]

Beliefs

Spren appear when something changes—when fear appears, or when it begins to rain. They are the heart of change, and therefore the heart of all things.

—Hesina[10]

Hesina follows the Vorin religion and is more religious that her husband.[10] She has faith in the power glyphwards, often burning them for her family or giving them to her sons.[10] She has a preference for simple and straightforward glyphs.[11]

Hesina believes that all things, with the exception of people, have a spren living within them.[6] When objects such as food are consumed, the spren within them are freed to return to their home.[6] People, by contrast, have souls instead of spren, however, Hesina believes that small spren can reside in parts of the body.[6] A similar thought is echoed by Syl, when she discusses the genders of Kaladin's weapons with him.[1]

History

Hesina’s exact birthplace and early life are unknown. After meeting Lirin, Hesina moved away from her family to live in Hearthstone,[12] and began a family. Two years after the birth of her first son, Kaladin, Hesina is blessed with the birth of her second child, Tien.[2] There is a large age gap of 18 years between Tien and her third child, Oroden.[2][1]

Lirin and Hesina, by User:Sheep

Due to their close ties to the local Brightlord, Hesina and her husband had hoped to secure an allegiance between the two families through marriage.[4] When Brightlord Wistiow fell gravely ill, making the likelihood of the union improbable, Hesina and her husband conspired to steal a significant amount of wealth from the Brightlord to secure passage for their son to continue his studies in Kharbranth.[6] The family claimed that the diamond broams[2] had been bequeathed to Lirin by Wistiow on his deathbed, a claim that they supported with forged documentation.[4] Despite their best efforts to legitimise the agreement, rumors of theft persisted amongst the other townsfolk.

After his death, Wistiow was replaced by Brightord Roshone as the lord of Hearthstone. Roshone's arrival did not bode well for Hesina and her family as he took an almost immediate disliking towards her husband, Lirin.[4] Roshone, aware of the inherited spheres and the possibility of their illegitimate procurement, demanded their return, of which Lirin refused. Roshone continued to fuel the rumors that the sphere's had been stolen and the agreement forged, whilst also driving the family towards destitution.[6] Despite his best efforts, Hesina and her family did not suffer as much as Roshone assumed, as the townsfolk continued donating to the family in secret, leaving spheres around the town for Hesina to find.[6] When the possibilities of work for Hesina dries up due to Roshone's meddling, Lirin makes a show of bending to the Brightlord to curb some of his ire.[6]

Roshone's hatred towards the family grew after Lirin is unable to save the life of his son Rillir.[9] This cumulated in Roshone having Hesina's son Tien, pressed into Highmarshal Amaram's army. Kaladin, unable to let his brother face the battlefield alone, volunteered and both of Hesina's children move away to fight at the Princedom's boarders. Four months later, Tien is killed.[13] Kaladin's parents are informed that he had been killed, shortly after he was sold into slavery by Amaram.[5]

Roshone's maltreatment of Lirin and Hesina subsided somewhat after Tien and Kaladin left Hearthstone.[5] After the coming of the Everstorm, Hesina is reunited briefly with her son Kaladin, after he returns to Hearthstone. When Kaladin departs to track down the transformed parshmen, Hesina stays behind with her husband in Hearthstone to aid the townsfolk and care for her Oroden.[1]

Attributes and Abilities

While not a surgeon like her husband, Hesina will occasionally assist Lirin with his surgeries. Her role in her husbands work diminishes as Lirin takes on apprentices, first Kaladin, then Mara, however, Hesina occasionally assists if multiple helpers are required.[14][5]

Hesina is able to both read and write in the Alethi Women's script. She is the only women in Hearthstone who is able to read, though this skill isn’t uncommon amongst higher ranking darkeyed women.[12]

Relationships

Hesina’s Parents

One of Hesina’s parents are lighteyes[15] and they are of a higher social standing than their daughter.[16] The initial meeting between Lirin and Hesina’s parents, went quite poorly.[4]

Hesina’s parents are rarely mentioned, particularly around her children, however, Hesina is still in contact with them.[9] When the family falls on tough times after the arrival of Roshone, Hesina’s parents offer aid to the family.[9]

Kaladin

Hesina and her husband had hoped that one day their son Kaladin would be able to marry Laral, the daughter of the Brightlord Wistiow.[2] During his earlier years, his parents had often encouraged both Kaladin and his brother to play with Laral to help strengthen the bonds between the two families.[4] Hesina often banters with her son, Kaladin, who had inherited her tendency towards clever word play.[4]

As a child, Kaladin remembers his parents being at odds with each other over the importance of his commitment to study. While his father wished for him to focus on his future and the chance to study and learn in Kharbranth, his mother wished for him to be able to enjoy his childhood.[2] Whether due to, or despite these disagreements, Kaladin is granted two hours a day by his father where he is not required to study.[17] After the arrival of Roshone, Kaladin’s parents try and get him to Kharbranth earlier than normally allowed, writing to the surgeons and requesting for their son to take the entry tests early. Their request is denied.[12]

When they are reunited, Kaladin finds that his mother still treats him like the child despite their many years apart.[5] She is delighted to find out that her son is a Knights Radiant.[1]
