Lopen is a Herdazian member of Bridge Four and a Windrunner on Roshar.[1]

Appearance

Lopen has brown hair and deep tan skin which is just a shade too dark to be Alethi. His fingernails are slate-colored and crystalline. He has an old slave's mark on his head. He looks a little flabby around the waist. Most strikingly, when he joins Bridge Four he is missing his left arm. He eventually regrows it with Stormlight.[2][3]

History

Lopen's family left Herdaz when he was a baby, and he has never visited his homeland ever since.[4] At some point, he loses his left arm. Lopen never accepted his one-armed state as part of his identity[5], and often jokes about it.

Unlike other members of Bridge Four, Lopen does not have a dark past. Someone causes Lopen to be sent to the bridge crews just for being annoying, without him committing any actual crime.[6] It is known that the Alethi have a generally dismissive and racist attitude towards Herdazians, likely enabling this injustice.

When Kaladin comes looking for new recruits for Bridge Four, an optimistic Lopen requests to be picked, not knowing the dangers that being part of Bridge Four entailed.[2] Though a one-armed man would not be good at carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because he was smiling, unlike all the other men there.

Kaladin tasks him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridge run. Lopen takes Dabbid and Hobber with him to carry water for the bridgemen, which became his regular assignment for a while. Later on Kaladin trains him in first aid and gives him medic duties as well.

He is always fascinated when Kaladin absorbs Stormlight, and says that women would love him if he learned to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempts to Invest Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeds. He uses it to restore his missing arm. [7]

As one of Kaladin's squires, he volunteers to teach some of the hopefuls who want to join Bridge Four. He spends some time assuring the ground that although he was leaving for the sky, he still loved the ground and the ground should not miss him.

Lopen later becomes a Knight Radiant in his own right and is seen playing hide-and-seek with his spren, a male Windrunner spren named Rua, after the Battle of Thaylen Field. Currently he has achieved the Second Ideal of the Windrunners.[1]

King of Alethkar

A wounded King Elhokar is taken to Lopen's home in Little Herdaz to recover after a failed attempt on his life. Deciding to conceal the king for his own safety, but being averse to lying, Lopen's family members somehow persuade the king to temporarily abdicate in favor of Lopen so that they could truthfully say that "King Elhokar" was not with them. This made Lopen the legitimate king of Alethkar for several minutes.[8]

When they reach the safety of Urithiru, Lopen tries to convince the Alethi to add him to the list of Alethi kings, to no avail.[9]

Family

Lopen's mother has implied that Herdazian families are matriarchal, with the women possessing all authority inside Herdazian homes. She tells this to the king of Alethkar himself when he was under her care.[7]

Lopen often talks about his many cousins. Lopen's definition of "cousin" is very broad and could include fifth cousins, or people dating his sister, or his aunt.[10] He is apparently related to a significant portion of the Herdazian population in the Alethi warcamps[11], explaining the high number of "cousins".

The following are members of Lopen's extended family:

Quotes

Hey, gancho! Hey! You want me, I think. You can use me. We Herdazians are great fighters, gon. You see, this one time, I was with, sure, three men and they were drunk and all but I still beat them.

—Lopen asking to be picked.[2]

Some of my cousins, they call me the Lopen because they haven't ever heard anyone else named that. I've asked around a lot, maybe one hundred...or two hundred...lots of people, sure. And nobody has heard of that name.

—Lopen being picked[2]

'Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before pancakes.'

—Lopen describing the first ideal of the Knights Radiant[1]
