Lopen is a Herdazian member of Bridge Four and a Windrunner on Roshar.[1]

Appearance

Lopen has brown hair and deep tan skin which is just a shade too dark to be Alethi. His fingernails are slate-colored and crystalline. He has an old slave's mark on his head. He speaks very quickly. He looks a little flabby around the waist and his left arm was cut off, but has since been regrown.[2][3]

History

Despite being Herdazian, Lopen was born in Alethkar and has never been to Herdaz. Lopen ended up in the bridge crews because somebody found him very annoying. They wanted him to go away, and since he was a Herdazian it pretty easy to send him to the bridge crews [4].

When Kaladin comes looking for new recruits for Bridge Four, he calls on Kaladin to pick him, and claims that he made this decision because the person who was picked was special, and all the others were not.[2] Even though he didn't know what a bridge crew was at the time, he wanted to join Bridge Four. Though a one-armed man would not be good at carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because he was smiling, unlike all the other men.

Because Lopen can't carry a bridge due to his missing arm, Kaladin tells him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridge run. Lopen takes Dabbid and Hobber with him to carry water for the bridgemen. Since Gaz seems to have no issues with this the first time, Lopen and Dabbid continue bringing water on every following bridge run.

He often makes fun of himself (he has many "one-armed Herdazian jokes") and is extremely optimistic: despite being in a terrible situation, he laughs frequently. He refers to himself as "The Lopen", not because of any Herdazian tradition, but simply because he likes to [5].

He is always fascinated when Kaladin absorbs Stormlight, and says that women would love him if he learned to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempts to Invest Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeds. He uses it to restore his missing arm. [6]

He brings King Elhokar to his family's home for a period of time to hide him. Lopen's mother forces him to eat, claiming that no king can tell a Herdazian mother what to do in her own home. They don't want to have to lie when they tell people that they don't have King Elhokar with them, so they persuade him to abdicate in favor of Lopen for about fifteen minutes [7].

He is currently one of Kaladin's squires, and volunteers to teach some of the hopefuls who want to join Bridge Four. He spends some time assuring the ground that although he was leaving for the sky, he still loved the ground and the ground should not miss him.

Family

Lopen's extended family is large, he has many cousins. This is common among Herdazian families. Several of his cousins join bridge four, because apparently this sort of group joining is common among Herdazians since nobody can tell them all apart. After Kaladin rescues King Elhokar from Moash and his team, he hides the king in Lopen's house. Lopen's mother apparently has ultimate authority in her house, and forces King Elhokar to eat his lunch.

Quotes

Hey, gancho! Hey! You want me, I think. You can use me. We Herdazians are great fighters, gon. You see, this one time, I was with, sure, three men and they were drunk and all but I still beat them.

—Lopen asking to be picked.[2]

Some of my cousins, they call me the Lopen because they haven't ever heard anyone else named that. I've asked around a lot, maybe one hundred...or two hundred...lots of people, sure. And nobody has heard of that name.

—Lopen being picked[2]

'Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before pancakes.'

—Lopen describing the first ideal of the Knights Radiant[1]
