Longroots are a type of plant native to Roshar.[1]

Description

Longroots are, as their name suggests, a type of long tuber that contains a sticky sap.[1] They grow in cracks in the rock where stormwater collects.[1] As a result, longroots are covered in dirt and crem from the highstorms when they are harvested.[1] They are brown in color.[1]

Culinary Use

Longroots are easy to grow and are cultivated and eaten in many regions of Roshar.[1][2] They are not known for their taste, which is faintly reminiscent of minerals.[1] Longroots are cheap, and are often eaten only when alternatives are not readily available.[1] Since they are tubers, they have a long shelf life; they can be boxed and put into storage[2] and can be transported by caravan.[3]

Longroots are technically edible when raw[4] but are usually cooked for a long time, commonly as an ingredient in stew.[1][5] The roots are peeled and cut into chunks before stewing.[1] Lunamor experiments with longroot stew on multiple occasions, including a version with shelled finger crab meat.[5][1]

History

Longroots have been seen as a foodstuff in a number of locations across the Rosharan continent, including the warcamps at the Shattered Plains,[5] Narak,[6] Yeddaw,[4] rural Alethkar,[1][3] and the Rockfall mansion in Kholinar.[7]

When Kaladin's family was struggling to get by due to Roshone's hostility, they ate longroots and other food donated secretly by the townspeople of Hearthstone.[1] Hesina and Kaladin peeled longroots while they discussed spren with Tien.[1]
