Lopen is a Herdazian member of Bridge Four and a Windrunner on Roshar.[1]
Appearance
Lopen has brown hair and deep tan skin which is just a shade too dark to be Alethi. His fingernails are slate-colored and crystalline. He has an old slave's mark on his head. He looks a little flabby around the waist. Most strikingly, when he joins Bridge Four he is missing his left arm. He eventually regrows it with Stormlight.[2][3]
History
Lopen's family left Herdaz when he was a baby. He grew up in Alethkar and has never visited his homeland since.[4] At some point, he lost his left arm. He has also been enslaved.[2] Lopen never accepted these misfortunes as part of his identity[5], and often joked about being one-armed.
Unlike many of the Bridge Four members, Lopen did not have a dark past. When Lopen was sent to the bridge crews, it was not because of any crime, but simply because he was a nuisance.[6] As he was both a Herdazian and a slave, it was likely the racist attitude of Alethi society that enabled this injustice.
While looking for recruits for Bridge Four among the batch of newcomers sent to the bridge crews, Kaladin was moved to choose the only smiling person there: an optimistic Lopen who even requested to be picked, unaware of the danger that being part of Bridge Four entailed.[2]
As he would of little use when carrying the bridge, Lopen was instead tasked to carry water for the crew during bridge runs. Later, Kaladin trained him in medical first aid and gave him medic duties as well.
During the Battle of the Tower, while unable to join the fighting, Lopen helped by ensuring that Kaladin always had a spear in hand. He did this by taking spears from fallen Alethi soldiers and tossing one to Kaladin when needed.[7]
Lopen and other slaves in Bridge Four were freed by Dalinar Kholin after they helped rescue his army from the Parshendi.[8] Later they had their slave brands covered up with a tattoo of glyphs for "Freedom", "Bridge Four", and (in smaller glyphs) the details of their freedom from slavery.[9]
King of Alethkar
A wounded King Elhokar was taken to Lopen's home in Little Herdaz to recover after a failed attempt on his life. Deciding to conceal the king for his own safety, but being averse to lying, Lopen's family members somehow persuaded the king to temporarily abdicate in favor of Lopen so that they could truthfully say that "King Elhokar" was not with them. This made Lopen the legitimate king of Alethkar for several minutes.[10]
When they reached the safety of Urithiru, Lopen tried to convince the Alethi to add him to the list of Alethi kings, to no avail.[11]
Radiant
Lopen always found Kaladin's abilities fascinating, particularly his ability to absorb Stormlight, and was vocal about his desire to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempted to Invest Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeded, allowing him to restore his missing arm through the healing effect of Stormlight. [12]
As one of Kaladin's squires, he volunteered to teach some of the hopefuls who wanted to join Bridge Four. Lopen later became a Knight Radiant in his own right, bonding with a male Windrunner spren named Rua. Currently he has achieved the Second Ideal of the Windrunners.[1]
Family
Lopen's mother has implied that Herdazian families are matriarchal, with the women possessing all authority inside Herdazian homes. She tells this to the king of Alethkar himself when he was under her care.[12]
Lopen often talks about his many cousins. Lopen's definition of "cousin" is very broad and could include fifth cousins, or people dating his sister, or his aunt.[13] He is apparently related to a significant portion of the Herdazian population in the Alethi warcamps[14], explaining the high number of "cousins".
The following are members of Lopen's extended family:
Quotes
“Hey, gancho! Hey! You want me, I think. You can use me. We Herdazians are great fighters, gon. You see, this one time, I was with, sure, three men and they were drunk and all but I still beat them. ”
—Lopen asking to be picked.[2]
“Some of my cousins, they call me the Lopen because they haven't ever heard anyone else named that. I've asked around a lot, maybe one hundred...or two hundred...lots of people, sure. And nobody has heard of that name. ”
—Lopen being picked[2]
“'Life before death, strength before weakness, journey before pancakes.' ”
—Lopen describing the first ideal of the Knights Radiant[1]
