Lopen is a Herdazian member of Bridge Four on Roshar.

Appearance

Lopen has brown hair and deep tan skin just a shade too dark to be Alethi. The fingernails on his hand are slate-colored and crystalline. He has an old slave's mark on his head. He speaks with a very quick pace. He looks a little flabby around the waist and his left arm has been cut off.[1][2]

History

He calls on Kaladin to pick him to join Bridge Four when Kaladin comes looking for new recruits. Though a one armed man would not be good carrying bridges, Kaladin chooses him because, unlike all of the other men, Lopen was smiling. When Kaladin asks why Lopen wanted to be picked, the response was that Kaladin was the only one picking anyone.[1]

Because he can't carry a bridge due to his missing arm, Kaladin tells him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridge run, so Lopen takes Dabbid and Hobber and they carry water for the bridgemen. Since Gaz seemed to have no issues with this the first time, Lopen and Dabbid continue bringing water on every following bridge run.

He often makes fun of himself (he has many "one armed Herdazian jokes") and laughs frequently, despite being in one of the worst situations possible, showing his extremely optimistic spirit.

He is always fascinated when Kaladin absorbs Stormlight, and says that women would love him if he learned to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempts to Invest Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeds. He uses it to restore his missing arm. [3]

Quotes

Hey, gancho! Hey! You want me, I think. You can use me. We Herdazians are great fighters, gon. You see, this one time, I was with, sure, three men and they were drunk and all but I still beat them.

—Lopen asking to be picked.[1]

Some of my cousins, they call me the Lopen because they haven't ever heard anyone else named that. I've asked around a lot, maybe one hundred...or two hundred...lots of people, sure. And nobody has heard of that name.

—Lopen being picked[1]
