Tyn is a con artist and associate of the Ghostbloods. [2] She was the head of the guards for Macob's caravan.[3]
Appearance and Personality
Tyn is lighteyed and of medium height with a wiry build. [4] Her hair is black and at least shoulder-length.[5] She wore trousers and a long coat, of good leather, that almost looked like a dress, buckled at the waist. She wore a tan glove over her safehand and spoke Alethi without an accent. [4] She ate the food she likes weather its men or women’s food. [2]
She talked with confidence, relaxed and free. [5] Shallan was reminded of her when she saw people whose interactions were a subtle game of one-upping each other. [6] She enjoyed acting above Shallan. She was smart and curious, she wants to have the upper hand, reason why she investigated into Shallan’s homeland, background and even the precedence of her crew.[7]
History
Tyn was raised in Tu Bayla by parents who worked as interpreters. [2]
Macob’s caravan
Tyn’s team was assigned to kill Jasnah while on the ship to the Shattered Planes. Due to Shallan’s burning of the ship, they didn’t survive and never came back for her. [5] Tyn had found herself without spheres and came to Macob’s caravan to find a safe way into the Shattered Planes. She exaggerated her experience and became the head of the guards for the caravan. [2] During their travel, they were assaulted by bandits. It was Shallan´s “soldiers” who assisted them and avoided total loss. In return, Shallan asked for their company on their way back to the Shattered Planes. [3] It was during this time that she took Shallan Davar as a con artist apprentice. [2] Through all the trip to the Shattered Planes, Tyn taught Shallan many different things. From accents to passing for lower class people and foreigners. [5] It was her “teaching” that caused Shallan’s first encounter with Kaladin to go so bad as she tried to bully him pretending to be a Horneater royal. [5] She is also responsible for Shallan not to move into the Kholin house to avoid being much in his debt and to play “difficult to get” with Adolin. [8]
Tyn’s death
When they were almost at their destiny Tyn invited Shallan to read the spanreed information together. There not only did she provide information on her homeland but confessed her intent of selling Shallan´s deserters as bounty. Moreover, they wrote about Tyn’s last job, not only did they confirm they were hired to kill Jasnah, but gave Tyn information on Shallan as the ward. Tyn understood she had been fooled and moved to kill Shallan. Though she did manage to hit her hard, Shallan summoned her blade and killed her [7] Pattern went to her deserters seeking for help, asking them to go fetch her. When Tyn´s soldiers resisted, they killed them.[7]
Aftermath
After Tyn´s death, Shallan took over the spanreed communication and agreed a meeting with the Ghostbloods. [7] With Tyn’s old spanreed letters, Pattern was able to crack the code to continue the communication with them. She also continued her con art and created Veil inspired on her and in the beginning, using her clothing and eyedrops. [9] The Ghostbloods in the beginning thought Tyn was either sick or using her apprentice, Veil (Shallan in disguise), to avoid confrontation, but they eventually figure out she had been killed by her and offer her membership. [10]
Attributes and Abilities
Tyn doesn’t have any magical abilities nor has any particular strength. She is resourceful and a good con artist.[2] “The art of the con”, in Tyn’s words is “The grand act of pretending to be someone you aren’t, then running off with the goods.” . [2] She is also resourceful as her spanreed and being part of the Ghostbloods gives her important information like Shallan’s background, and the news on Jah Keved. [11]
Relationships
Shallan
During [Shallan]]´s time with Macob’s caravan, Tyn invited her to dine with her, she confessed on having a spanreed which she had connected to Tashikk where she had inquired about her; with the information she decided Sallan was a con artist and decided to take her as apprentice under the promise of the “goods” she thought Shallan wanted. [2] Shallan remembers killing Tyn at multiple times. [12][13] She noted many of the bar patrons in the Breakaway had the confidences of Tyn.[6]

Trivia
It had become clear that Tyn often chose to have someone like Shallan under her wing. An acolyte, someone to nurture. Shallan suspected that was at least partly because Tyn liked having someone around to impress. [15]
