Plantilla:SprenInfobox Deathspren are a possible type of spren from Roshar that appear around the dying.
They are invisible to the healthy and apear black and fist-sized, with many legs and glowing red eyes to the dying. Dying hallucinations may be attributed to seeing deathspren.
They are widely considered a superstition, and it is unknown whether deathspren are attracted to death or are a proximal cause of death. Lirin teaches Kaladin that deathspren hate water, and therefore a surgeon should always wash his hands before working with a patient.[1] Many Alethi believe that deathspren cannot be seen, except by the dying.[2] When Kaladin is suffering from massive injuries and fever, he either sees or hallucinates deathspren. Sylphrena scares the encroaching deathspren away.[3]
