Shallan encountered Gaz with a group of deserters in the Frostlands. She vowed to give them pardons upon returning to the Shattered Plains if they accompanied her there. Shallan's respectful treatment of Gaz improved his attitude towards his position and made him extremely loyal towards her. Upon returning to the Shattered Plains he received his pardon and gained a permanent position as one of Shallan's bodyguards.
