The religions in my portfolio weren't useless after all. None of them were. They weren't all true. But they all had truth.

—Sazed[2]

Sazed is a Terrisman steward from Scadrial.[3] He is part of Kelsier Kelsier's crew. He is a Keeper , considered something of a rebel by the others of his kind. He is the current Vessel of the Shard of Harmony.

Appearance and Personality

Sazed was soft spoken with a higher pitch and almost with a melodic accent. [3]

Sazed has a shaven head, [4] his earlobes had been stretched out, and the ears themselves contained studs that ran around their perimeter. He wore the lavish, colorful robes of a Terris steward—the garments were made of embroidered, overlapping V shapes, alternating among the three colors of his master’s house. [3]

He is kindly and, due to the Lord Ruler's breeding program, very docile. He had a shaven head and wore robes with arrow patterns as was common to all Terris stewards. Sazed, as a Keeper, has many earrings, bracelets and bands that act as his Feruchemical metalminds.[4]

History

The Skaa Rebellion

The only Terrisman to actively support the skaa rebellion. His main task was to gather information. Sazed is Kelsier´s steward appointed to serve Lord Renoux and later Vin who he prepared to play the part of a noble woman.[3] He helped her memorize the names of powerful families, practice dinners, gone over conversational etiquette, memorized gossip and later dancing among other things. [1][5]

He accompanied Vin to Luthadel balls, at the start of them he stayed as close as possible giving advice and support, but later moved to the steward’s dinner to gain intelligence [6] He would later report all details including the people who asked Vin to dance. [7] Sazed found Vin missing after she followed Keliser to Kredik Shaw, he managed to get there just in time to retrieve her, though severely wounded, and took also book they found there. [8]

After that event, he spent most of his time translating the book, which turned out to be Alendi’s journal but at the time he believed it was from the Lord Ruler itself. He spent long hours in the library, poring over its pages with an uncharacteristically excited air. [9] Sazed was fascinated with the information from the journal, mostly on information from his people (Terris) and from how the land looked (green). [4] Later he came to her aid when she was captured by the Lord Ruler.

The Siege of Luthadel

A portrait of Sazed by Kit Buss

After the Lord Ruler's death, Sazed left Luthadel in order to fulfill his duty as a Keeper and spread the knowledge of the time before the Lord Ruler to the people of the Final Empire. Sazed's carried the complete knowledge of the Terris people, but his specialty was religion, especially those from before the Final Empire. He came across mysterious deaths somehow related to the mists.

He was then found by Marsh, who led him to the Conventical of Seran and found the last words of Kwaan inscribed on a metal plate. Sazed then left his duties as a Keeper in order to bring his important knowledge and his aid to Luthadel, especially that concerning his fears concerning the deaths caused by the mists.

Sazed returned to Luthadel and worked with Kelsier's old team to convince Vin and Elend Venture to leave the city before it fell to the besiegers. Sazed attempted to spare Vin and Elend by drawing them away from the siege with a fake map to the Well of Ascension. While in Luthadel, Sazed found himself falling in love with a Terriswoman Tindwyl, a member of the Synod who had come to Luthadel train Elend. He studied Kwaan's message with Tindwyl who became as captivated by it as he. Sazed and Tindwyl fought to defend the city during the Koloss attack and Tindwyl was killed. Sazed was left to help defend Luthadel and used his metal minds to great effect. Vin realized that the Well of Ascension was in Luthadel and returned only just in time to save Sazed from some koloss.

Sazed eventually realized that Vin should not release the power at the Well of Ascension and tried to prevent it, but was stopped by Marsh. He had discovered that Ruin was changing the words on Sazed's copy of Kwaan's message, so Sazed returned to the Conventical to find that Kwaan had left a warning: "Alendi must not reach the Well of Ascension, for he must not be allowed to release the thing that is imprisoned there."== Attributes and Abilities == Spook is the crew’s best Tineye, so he usually got the most important watches. He snapped at 5 years old. [10] After Kelsier’s death, he worked as scout and spy. [11] He had flared his tin nonstop for a year straight—never letting up, keeping his body in a constant state of super-heightened senses—and it had changed him; he became an Allomantic savant. [12] Because of this, he had a blurring array of sensory knowledge that his body could instinctively use. He could feel disturbances in the air, sense tremors in the floor, and could know where people were simply by how close their heartbeats sounded. [13] He is finally given full Mistborn abilities by Sazed when becoming Harmony. However, he does not have the strength of a lerasium Mistborn, but a Mistborn of the strength of a typical Allomancer around the end of The Final Empire.[14]

Attributes and Abilities

Sazed was a Feruchemist and he used the ability to keep information. He held the information of old and current religions. He held five hundred and sixty-two different religions: their prayers, their beliefs, their mythologies. [1]

Relationships

Kelsier

A very good man, Mistress. One of the best I’ve known.

— Sazed to Vin answering if Keliser was a good man [3]

Vin

Sazed was appointed to coach Vin to play the part of Valette Renoux a noblewoman. He saw that her hair, makeup, and dressing were appropriate. During that time, he also offered information on religions to see if Vin would find one interesting. [1]

Quotes

People are valuable, Mistress Vin, and so—therefore—are their beliefs.

— Sazed to Vin on why he keeps the information of religions [1]

Trivia

He was sometimes referred as “Vaht”, apparently, the proper title for a Terrisman steward. [1]

Portfolio of Religions

Sazed's focus as a Keeper was religions, and he knew over 500 that existed prior to the Ascension of the Lord Ruler.[15] He made a habit of preaching various religions to people, trying to find the one that fit them the best.[3] Though many of them contradicted each other, he believed there was truth behind all of them.[16] Following Tindwyl's death, he stopped preaching the religions he knew to others and rejected all belief, trying to find a way to empirically verify the religions.[17] After learning the old Terris religion from the kandra and considering peoples' faith in the context of their lives, he once again accepted the truths of his religions and adopted the Terris faith.[18] During his Ascension, the truths recorded by the various religions provided the knowledge he needed to restore Scadrial to its pre-Final Empire state.[2] The following is a list of the religions Sazed mentioned:

  • Jaism, founded by a man known as the Ja, which preaches discord. Its followers end almost every sentence by saying "Praise the Ja."[19]
  • The Truths of the Bennet, which considers mapmaking to be a holy duty and whose priests are ship captains. Sazed once preached this religion to Kelsier.[20]
  • Trelagism, whose adherents worship the stars, which they call the Thousand Eyes of their god, Trell. Sazed once preached this religion to Vin.[1]
  • The Cazzi, who worship death and study the human body. Sazed once offered one of their prayers over the dead bodies of Camon's crew.[16]
  • The Dadradah, who believe worshiping art brings them closer to god. Sazed once preached this religion to Clubs, and it was the last one he ever taught.[21]
  • The Larsta, who worship the beauty of nature. Kelsier's wife, Mare, was a follower of this religion. Sazed used this religion to marry Vin and Elend.[22]
  • The Astalsi, who believe each person has a certain amount of luck allotted to them. Sazed preached this religion to Vin[20]
  • Duis, a god known to watch over weary travelers. Sazed said a prayer to them while running from the Conventical of Seran to Luthadel.[23]
  • HaDah, a religion that worships an agricultural god. Sazed used their funeral rites for the first skaa he encountered who had been killed by the mist.[24]
  • The Valla, who survived the Lord Ruler's persecution of other religions the longest, lasting even after their leaders were killed.[20]
  • The Steel Ministry, the religion of the Lord Ruler.[25]
  • The Church of the Survivor, the religion that began to worship Kelsier after his death.[26]
  • The Terris religion, responsible for the Terris Prophecies, which celebrates scholarship and tells of Ruin and Preservation.[18]
