Fortune is a Spiritual property in the cosmere,[1] related to luck, seeing the future, or versions of the future.[2]

The Nature of Fortune

The precise nature of Fortune and how it functions and is used, is currently unclear. Fortune has been described as "luck" by less cosmere-aware groups, such as the Terris three centuries after the Catacendre.[3] However, it is clear from other individuals that are more cosmere-aware that Fortune is more than simple luck. It's a way of knowing things you would not know otherwise,[4] and a way in which one can see the future.[2] It is implied that Fortune is a thing one can access[5] and draw upon.[6] Someone drawing upon Fortune can lead to events that appear to be coincidences.[6]

Though the Spiritual Realm is always how future sight works in the cosmere,[7] Fortune is not the exact same as the Spiritual Realm.[5][1] Fortune is one way of accessing the Spiritual Realm. Every time one uses Fortune, they use the Spiritual Realm, but individuals can see into the Spiritual Realm without using Fortune.[1]

In general, future sight has been said to be dangerous in the cosmere,[8] so Fortune would likely be as well.

Uses of Fortune

Luck

Fortune can be used in many ways to manipulate the user's luck.[9]

Feruchemy: In Feruchemy, chromium is used to store Fortune. Filling a chromiummind will make the Feruchemist unlucky, and tapping it will increase their luck.[10] A chromium Compounder would be able to use chromium to have a nearly infinite supply of fortune and luck.[11]

Hemalurgy: In Hemalurgy, destiny might be stolen by a chromium spike.[12]

Axies: Axies refers to his bad luck as a result of the "Curse of Kind", but it is not clear what the curse is or whether it affects all Siah Aimians.[13]

Future Sight

Fortune can be used in many ways to allow the user to see the future.[2] Future sight always draws upon the Spiritual Realm to work.[7] In general, future sight has been said to be dangerous in the cosmere.[8] Any time someone sees the future, it will have ripples against someone else's ability to see the future.[14] Future sight can be used to gain knowledge of where and when the user needs to be somewhere,[15] and what they need to do.[4][16] This ability is not perfect, and can sometimes tell a user where they are suppose to be without them knowing why they need to be there.[4] Future sight can also alert to user of the presence of certain objects.[17]

Shards: Shards can perceive the future, although it can be difficult for them. Some are better at it than others, with Cultivation and Preservation in particular being noted as particularly excelling.[18][19] Shardic power can also be utilized by others to perceive the future like they do: examples of this are atium, as well as the visions of the Returned.[20]

Allomantic Electrum: In Allomancy, burning electrum will reveal possible futures of the Allomancer up to several seconds, by casting electrum shadows of oneself.[10] While burning electrum the Allomancer's future will not be revealed to enemy Allomancers burning atium. Instead, it will cause the Allomancer's observed atium shadow to split, preventing the enemy Allomancer from predicting one's actions.[21]

Allomantic Atium: In Allomancy, burning atium allows the Allomancer to see a few seconds into the future, by producing atium shadows of everything in sight. These shadows perform future actions. Burning atium expands the Allomancer's mind to be able to accept and process all of the information, even allowing the Allomancer to dodge incoming attacks from behind. If another Allomancer burning atium is encountered, the atium shadows will split, since each seeing into the other's future means that they can both make different decisions that affect both Allomancers' outcomes. An Allomancer's atium shadow will also split when burning electrum. Burning duralumin with atium will allow Allomancers to see the ultimate effects of their actions, allowing them to peer into the Spiritual Realm.[22]

Trivia

  • Brandon had atium see the future so that he would foreshadow Fortune.[2]
  • Brandon has said there is a "good reason" why he hasn't shown a character with Fortune yet, as he is saving that for later.[40]
  • The Mistborn Adventure Game's version of Fortune is not canonical, and Brandon had a different way for the mechanic to work.[41]
