Yolen es un planeta en el Cosmere donde ocurrió la Fragmentación de Adonalsium.[2][3] Es el mundo natal de todos los recipientes de Esquirla originales, junto a Hoid y Frost.[4][5] Los habitantes de Yolen se llaman “yoleños”.[6]

Geografía y ecología
Se sabe muy poco sobre la geografía de Yolen, aparte de que tiene algunas características inusuales.[9] Su gravedad y otras medidas son consideradas como estándar en el Cosmere por eruditos conscientes del Cosmere como Khriss. Su ecología se divide en dos partes diferentes. Algunas partes son similares al Scadrial post-Catacendro, con una flora y fauna parecida. Estas partes se llaman trune.[10] Otras partes están cubiertas de vida Fain, un ecosistema parásito poco entendido y hostil para los humanos.[11][12] Aunque el Fain tiene la forma de una flora corriente, las plantas y la tierra apoderadas por ella son de un color blanco como el hueso y derraman un líquido rojo cuando se trituran o parten.[13] A pesar de que no tenga una Esquirla asociada, en Yolen existe algo parecido a una perpendicularidad.[14]

History
Yolen is one of the oldest inhabited worlds in the cosmere, and the first on which humans have appeared.[18] It's also the homeworld of Adonalsium, the entity believed to be the cosmere's creator deity.[21] At some point, fain either appeared or traveled there, and began spreading, overtaking the original landscape. After some time, the original inhabitants learned how to deal with it and keep it back.[12]
“I learned it many, many years ago from a man who didn't know who he was, Your Majesty. It was a distant place where two lands meet and gods have died. But that is unimportant.”
At some point, sixteen Yolish people,[23] not all of whom were human,[4] came together to kill Adonalsium for various reasons.[1] The Shattering of Adonalsium, as it came to be known, dramatically altered the entire cosmere. All Investiture that once belonged to Adonalsium was divided between the Shards created by its death, and the preexisting magic systems were altered in how they functioned.[24][25]
Following the Shattering, most Shards left Yolen to go their own separate ways.[26] Many humans have also abandoned it, spreading across the cosmere.[19] Over the following millennia, it has become hidden in some way, shrouded from prying eyes, making reaching and researching it extremely difficult.[1] By the time of the True Desolation on Roshar, its remaining population is very small, although the fain ecosystem seems to be doing just fine.[17][11]
Magic
Yolen appears to have several magic systems, though only two are known.
Lightweaving
Lightweaving is cosmere's original illusion magic. It's capable of creating auditory and visual manifestations, either independent or attached to a host.[6] It can produce disguises, as well as alter the appearance of other substances, like smoke.[27][28] It's most similar to the Surge of Illumination from Roshar, albeit less restrictive, not requiring a spren bond.[29] Hoid learned this original form of Lightweaving on Yolen.[22]
The Shattering appears to have changed something in Lightweaving, as the original magic is only semi-functional.[30]
Microkinesis
Prior to the Shattering, Yolen was host to some form of magic related to the manipulation of atomic particles, known as axi.[31] The power allows its users to observe atoms and interact with them directly,[32] although they are incapable of creating nuclear fission.[33] Axi can also be used to refer to the smallest theoretical division of matter.[31]

Trivia
- Brandon Sanderson named Yolen after Jane Yolen, who wrote Dragon's Blood, one of the early fantasy books he read.[34]
- The tree branch with writing on it from Mraize's collection comes from Yolen.[35]
- The Shattered Plains, as well as the Bridge Four plot and the character of Lunamor, were originally on Yolen. Brandon moved them to Roshar upon seeing concept art made by Ben McSweeney for The Way of Kings.[36]
- There is a saying on Yolen: "May two worlds become one to you." This is not referring to Realms.[37]
- While gods existed and died on Yolen prior to the Shattering, these gods were not Shards.[38]
