Vivenna was a princess of Idris on Nalthis. As the first daughter of the king of Idris, Dedelin, she was trained to marry the God King of Hallandren from a young age. At the age of twenty-two, she was to be sent to T'Telir to marry him. However, Dedelin's love for his first daughter caused him to instead send Siri, whose disobedience to traditional Idrian humility angered him.

She attempted to rescue Siri from her marriage with Susebron.[1] After arriving in T'Telir, she looked for the Idrian's informant, Lemex. So she met Denth and Tonk Fah, who were posing as basic mercenaries. They led her to Lemex. There she had to realise that Lemex was ill and near to dying. Before his death, Lemex transferred his Breath to Vivenna against her will, bringing her to the Third Heightening. Lemex' mercenaries told that their contract with Lemex lasts and she was their new employer. With their help Vivenna spent many weeks in T'Telir stirring the Idrian community into a rebellion against the Court of Gods. She was saved by Clod, Jewels' Lifeless, after being attacked by the authorities.

Subsequently she spent time as a drab after running away from Denth, who revealed his true intentions to her after she was kidnapped by Vasher. She became a drab to avoid detection in the Idrian slums, where she was forced into poverty. She kept a shawl that held the Breath she still owned.[2]

She was trained to be an Awakener by Vasher, who rescued her from a group of mercenaries in the slums. She and Vasher attempted to undo her original intentions of attacking Hallandren, instead speaking to the common people of opposing war between Hallandren and Idris. After Vasher was captured by Denth and Tonk Fah, she helped free him and gave her Breath to him in the conflict.[3]
