Trelagism was a dualist religion named after the god Trell. Trell's opposite was Nalt, and the two were believed to be brothers.mb1 Trell's identity is of some interest in the cosmere.3183

Trelagists believed that night was sacred and daylight was profane. During the night, Trelagists were able to see the Thousand Eyes of Trell (the stars) watching over them, but during the day, Nalt, jealous of the worship given to his brother, would shine his single eye (the sun) on the land, blocking Trelagists from seeing Trell's eyes.

One can speculate that their religious observances, if they had any, were at their height during the winter months, and summer months may have contained many petitions to Trell or attempts to ward off Nalt's jealousy. (See "Geography", below.)

Before the Final Empire eradicated Trelagism, it was practiced primarily by a people known as the Nelazan. Little is known about the Nelazan themselves, but they were described by Sazed as being a "determined people", and that they mapped out the entire night sky. (Likely, it was only the northern sky and not the entire sky; see "Geography", below.) Since the stars were considered to be Trell's eyes, it is possible that the Nelazan did not name the stars in a manner that other cultures might, but rather gave stars — or constellations — names related to attributes associated with Trell.

Geography
The Nelazan were likely located far to the north of Scadrial, close to or just south of its equivalent of the Arctic Circle. It was noted by Sazed that their winters had few hours of daylight, and their summers had few hours of darkness.cite Had the Nelazan lived on or north of Scadrial's Arctic Circle, their winters would have had at least one day of total darkness, and their summers would have at least one day of total daylight.

Trelagism may have diverged from its original beliefs since the end of the Final Empire. Miles Dagouter and Edwarn Ladrian have been the only self-proclaimed adherents to the belief so far encountered, and Edwarn Ladrian doesn't talk of his beliefs much (only once), so the apparent divergence could simply be a personal opinion of Miles Dagouter, or even his interpretation of beliefs that have yet to be revealed to the reader.

Miles Dagouter
Miles claimed to worship Trell and believed that Trell created mankind, but made no comments regarding the Thousand Eyes or Nalt's eye, or even expressed a dislike of daylight. In addition, he held the beliefs that the ruling class should be made up exclusively of twinborn — a concept that might be unimaginable to the Nelazan — and that Trell had made men like him specially to right wrongs in the world.aol Whether or not he was a Trelagist is not clear; he referred to his religion as "Trellism", rather than "Trelagism", but he did name his god as "Trell". Miles also claimed, as he was being executed, that "the men of gold and red, bearers of the final metal, will come".aol It is unknown if this was a personal belief, or a tenet of Trellism.

You are fools! One day, the men of gold and red, bearers of the final metal, will come to you. And you will be ruled by them. Worship. Worship Trell and wait ...

— Miles Dagouter's last words[1]

Trellism is a mysterious religion related to Trell. It is practiced on Scadrial by several members of the Set.

Beliefs

Followers of Trellism appear to trace the religion's roots to Trelagism as it is described in the Words of Founding.[2] The extent to which these religions are related is unclear, as the two religions share no apparent similarities beyond the name of their god.[3] Adherents believe in a deity named named Trell, whom they consider to be their creator in some capacity.[2][4] At least some among them appear to believe in an apocalyptic prophecy which claims that "men of gold and red, bearers of the final metal" will arrive and rule over the people of Elendel, and perhaps all of Scadrial.[1]

Miles Dagouter encouraged people to actively worship Trell, though the details on how Trell is worshiped are unknown.[1] Miles believed that Trell created him "to see wrongs righted" and that the religion's teachings proved he was "special" in some way.[2] It is unclear to what extent Miles' beliefs concerning social justice are held in common among other members of the religion. It is likely that some kernel of these ideas is pervasive in Trellism, given some relations to the philosophies of Paalm[5] and Edwarn Ladrian.[6]

Followers

Despite the religion's mention in the Words of Founding, the it is relatively unknown among the general population of northern Scadrial.[7] Marasi Colms had a difficult time researching the religion, with few people willing to speak openly about their knowledge.[8] Several members of the Set, in both high and low positions, are followers of Trellism, and the organization itself may exist for the purpose of serving Trell.[9][8] Presumed followers of Trellism have been seen both swearing by[10] and giving thanks to[9] Trell.

Red-eyed Faceless Immortals appear to work on behalf of Trell, and have been known to visit followers of Trell on occasion.[8] Paalm also appears to be an agent of Trell,[11] though these kandra do not show any signs of being adhrents of Trellism.
