“ I am being chased. Your friends of the Seventeenth Shard, I suspect. I believe they're still lost, following a false trail I left for them. They'll be happier that way. I doubt they have any inkling what to do with me should they actually catch me. ”
The Seventeenth Shard is a mysterious organization that, along with Hoid and the Shards, is speculated to be influential in the overall Cosmere. Its members have a nonintervention philosophy,[3] believing that the Shards were split up for a reason and that people shouldn't dabble in mixing them.[4] The organization's name was very deliberately chosen.[5]
Beliefs and Objectives
The Seventeenth Shard has a non-interventionist policy when it comes to the planets and Shards.[3] They believe that the Shards split up for a reason and they shouldn't interfere in bringing them together. They watch the planets but do not approve of getting involved or assimilating into another planet's society. They believe interfering will merely exacerbate the conflicts between the Shards.[4] While they have goals beyond chasing down Hoid, those goals are not yet known.[6]
History
Roshar
Despite their non-intervention policy, members of the Seventeenth Shard accidentally brought the common cold to Roshar.[3]
Ishikk the Purelaker is acting as a guide and informant to three members of the Seventeenth Shard who are looking for Hoid.[7] Ishikk does not know they are worldhoppers or even their names, though he nicknames them Grump, Thinker, and Blunt.
- Grump has the distinct linguistic pattern of Dulas from Sel and is the Elantrian Galladon.[8]
- Thinker has a scar across his scalp and is Demoux from Scadrial.[9]
- Blunt is Baon from Taldain.[10][11][12]
Relationships
- Hoid
- The Seventeenth Shard has an antagonistic relationship with Hoid. Because of their non-interference policy, they do not approve or agree with Hoid's actions on various planets. They are worried and believe his actions will interfere with their overall goals. As a result, they are trying to chase Hoid down and stop him in some way.[6] Hoid does not seem particularly worried about what the Seventeenth Shard would do if they caught him.[2]
- Ghostbloods
- The Ghostbloods and the Seventeenth Shard are not working together.[13] The Ghostbloods actively try to recruit members of the Seventeenth Shard, particularly the field agents.[14] The Ghostbloods seem to have been successful at least once, as Iyatil was a member of the Seventeenth Shard before she joined the Ghostbloods.[15]
Known Members
- Aslydin - Demoux's wife on Scadrial[16]
- Demoux - A soldier and Seer from Scadrial
- Galladon - An Elantrian from Sel
- Baon - A soldier and sand master[17] from Taldain
- Iyatil - A former member from Silverlight with Southern Scadrian ancestry;[18] left to join the Ghostbloods.[15]
Trivia
- Most members of the Seventeenth Shard, including Demoux, use a method that significantly slows aging, but doesn't stop it completely.[19]
- Brandon does not have a book currently planned for them,[20] but they will play a large role in future books.[3]
