Calmseer is a Returned from Hallandren on Nalthis.[1] She died before the book begins.
Calmseer was Lightsong's mentor when he first Returned. She truly cared about her followers, doing what she could for each petitioner she denied.[2] She often spoke to Lightsong of her feelings of guilt at refusing to grant a petition. Lightsong and Calmseer were intimate, though their relationship grew out of respect, not lovePlantilla:Annotation ref. She had dinner with Lightsong and Allmother the night before she gave her Breath away.[3]
Lightsong often reflects that Calmseer was the most divine among the recent generations of Hallandren Returned. Allmother agrees with him. [3] He believes that her guilt about the petitions is what drove her to grant a request.[2] Actually the request Calmseer grants is the reason she Returned in the first place: the petitioner was Calmseer's daughter from her first life, asking for healing from the same disease that killed Calmseer herself. When Calmseer saw her daughter in the petitions line, she remembered her previous life and the reason she Returned, and sacrificed herself to heal her daughterPlantilla:Annotation ref.
