This page contains a chapter by chapter summary of Calamity. We hope this summary will make it easier to find specific areas of the book, as well as providing a quick plot refresher for anyone who doesn't want to take the time to reread the entire book.

Prologue

A brief word that appears to be the from the point of view of David Charleston, claiming the depths will have him again.

Part One

Chapter 1

The book opens with the Reckoners assaulting the Knighthawk Foundry in West Virginia in an attempt to get equipment. After the events of Babilar, Tia is missing and David is now in charge. The group has been cut off from Epic-derived technology due to Prof, who now hunts them. The team attempting to infiltrate the Knighthawk castle consists of Megan Tarash, Cody, Missouri Williams, and Abraham, who consider this their last ditch effort before going completely into hiding. The castle is well defended, with a few surprises their informant didn’t know of. As the chapter closes, David decides he has moments to take action, and enters the complex himself while the team fights.

Chapter 2

David sneaks through the tunnel towards the complex, while reflecting on where the Reckoners get their technology. After a brief conversation with Megan, while moving through a corridor some drones approach and David ducks into an unlocked room. He finds out Abraham has also infiltrated from the roof. David takes in his surroundings and discovers he is in a room with bodies.

Chapter 3

David takes in his surroundings of some kind of lab. There are lots of body parts and pieces in various containers or sitting out. While looking around through his scope, a small cleaning robot comes upon him. David grabs the robot before it can run away and leaves it upside down as he moves on. Talking to Mizzy over the radio, he heads through a locked door and down a narrow corridor. While traveling the corridor, he and Mizzy discuss theories or questions on how Epic-derived technology is made and whether the Epic needs to be dead. David wanders into what appears to be an ambush.

Chapter 4

Just in time, David pulls back from the ambush. He retreats back down the hall to a more defensible position. He then uses the guns ability to fire around corners and remotely to set up a distraction and lay a false trail with the cleaning robot and some bags of blood. David fakes being shot and hides in a tub to conceal his heat signature. Once the armed robots move on chasing the trail, he doubles back to the room with he freezers. Inside, he finds frozen vials. Again, someone has seemingly gotten the drop on him as the chapter ends.

Chapter 5

David finds himself in a room with a lone armed robot. There is a male voice coming from the robot that talks to him. The voice claims to be the person the Reckoners are attempting to steal from. Based on the conversation, they don’t know that Prof has split ways with them. While talking, the voice is informed by someone else that someone has stolen something valuable. He immediately threatens David, but is interrupted when Firefight shows up. Turns out Megan is in the room and using her powers. David is shot in the leg, grabs some vials, and begins to escape with Megan. They make their way back towards where David, and apparently Megan, came in. They find another group of drones waiting for them in ambush. Megan causes a cave-in and seemingly is starting to loose control over her power.

Chapter 6

Megan is having difficulty keeping Calamity from controlling her. David helps calm her down with a lighter and the illusion of the cave-in stops. They are both surrender to the drones and the voice comes back from one of them. He tries to figure out how they did the illusion and finally realizes she must be an Epic. He does seem to know that Prof has succumbed. Mizzy causes an actual cave in that very closely mimics the illusion. As they start to escape, Megan hangs back to cover David so the rest can escape. The voice and figure show up on a panel as David is about to leave. He realizes they aren’t working for Prof any longer and decides they need to talk. Drones stop and David faints.

Chapter 7

The story picks back up inside the Foundry. Megan, David, and Abraham are inside talking to Dean Knighthawk. They discover his wife was one of the original team with Prof. David also realizes that Knighthawk is paralyzed. They tak about Prof, now known as Limelight some and reveal they want to bring him back.

Chapter 8

Knighthawk, carried by his mannequin, and the Reckoners travel through the building on the way to get food. On the way they discuss Epics, weaknesses, and fears.

Chapter 9

In the dining area, Knighthawk and the Reckoners discuss the technology he is willing to give them. Knighthawk reveals that he keeps some of his important technology hidden in food, such as potato salad. He leaves the more worthless stuff out for those who successfully penetrate his facility. The Reckoners also discover that much of the rumors they hear around Knighthawk Foundry, are disinformation. They also find out he is in Atlanta, now Ildithia, located in Kansas. The city is able to move, but David is unsure how quickly. Knighthawk limits what he tells them and holds back his best stuff.
