Chapter 1
- Characters
- Plot Summary
Nomad wakes from skipping not knowing where he is. He is questioned by people who speak a language he doesn't understand, and he doesn't have enough Investiture to have Auxiliary translate what they are saying. He notices that the plants around him are growing extremely quickly, and that is just before dawn. People in white coats are chaining people to stakes in the ground. When one of the white-coated people tries to place manacles on him, Nomad tries to fight back, but his muscles lock up. He remembers he is beset upon by a Torment, a mysterious condition caused by him having held a Dawnshard that makes him incapable of causing harm, even in self-defense or defense of others.
A mysterious man—missing his chest, which is replaced by a glowing ember in the center of a burned-out hole—then attacks Nomad with a bat, and Nomad finds his Torment is preventing him from summoning any sort of weapon. He also notices the brightness of the soon-to-rising sun seems much too large for a normal planet. After Nomad stops one of the attacks with his bare hands, the ember man (and others around him) are surprised. The light from the horizon begins to blaze with intense heat, and all the plants around them begin wilting. Nomad is beaten to the ground by another ember man, where his is chained to a rock.
The rising sun continues getting brighter, making the ground smoke and burn, and Nomad concludes the sunlight is Invested, making it extremely intense. Nomad and Auxiliary briefly consider trying to absorb the Investiture, but conclude the sunlight is far too intense to safely do that. After failing to manifest a weapon, he creates a small crowbar that lets him break the chain. He then hurls the chain at a hover bike that's flying away and is dragged away as the sunlight begins to burn him.

- Plot Summary
The hover bike slams Nomad to the ground at a high speed. While low on Investiture, Aux engages Nomad's healing. Aux notices that the hover bike can easily outspeed the sun, and concludes that the planet has a slow rotation. The hover bikes, including the one Nomad is attached to, stop for seemingly no reason other than to regain their bearings. After a short conversation, the hover bikes start back up and fly again.
After flying for what felt like an hour, Nomad sees a floating city, lifted around thirty or forty feet above the ground by the thrust of hundreds of engines beneath it. Nomad had seen them before on other planets, but none has look as ramshackle as this one. Nomad looks up at the sky for the second time and sees a collection of rings overlooking the planet that pointed toward the sun, tipped at a slight angle to perfectly reflect sunlight upon the planet.
Nomad is hauled upward and is brought up onto the metal surface of the city. A small crowd gathers around him, as well as five people behind them with embers for hearts. He sees that there are many varieties of skin color in this one city. A newcomer with deep-red glowing eyes enters, and people make way for him. Nomad sees a glowing coming from his chest behind a coat, and assumes "Glowing Eyes" has an ember in his chest as well. He takes Nomad and asks him a question several times, getting angrier with each attempt. Nomad replies with a language the man doesn't understand, saying he can't speak their tounge. Glowing Eyes realizes that Nomad isn't going to answer and pulls off his glove, revealing an ordinary pale hand. He seizes Nomad by the face, and nothing happened. Aux recognizes a few words in the language, and is able to make out being called "One Who Escaped the Sun." A few officers grab Nomad and drag him off as the city begins to break apart.

- Plot Summary
Nomad awakens chained to a large plate of metal, and the Cinder King is feasting on the souls of the weaker peasants. A stronger peasant is brought forward, then stabbed with a glowing spear which turns her into an ember warrior. Nomad and Aux discuss whether the Investiture from the spear could be captured, which might allow Nomad to form a Connection enabling language. Then the red-headed fellow is brought up to be embedded. Nomad breaks his own hand to get out of the manacles, and is able to throw Aux as a six-foot sword, by aiming away from the Cinder King. The Cinder King is awed by the blade, but as he brings Nomad to the Cinder spear, an explosion rocks the arena.

In addition to explosions, an attack freezes all the ember people. Aux is able to protect Nomad from the bracers, but the Torment prevents other weapons or tools that Nomad might use to escape the other manacle. Nomad mentions he might have practiced more if not for his perpetual need to be on the run. People conducting the attack retrieve the green-eyed, black- and silver-haired ember woman from near Nomad. They ignore Nomad until one of them is taken out by a rifle shot from Cinder King. He shields the surviving woman with Aux. He can use a rifle to a very limited degree, such as blowing away his other manacle. They retrieve the red-headed man and flee at the rear of a pack of hovercycles, but the ember people wake and give chase.

He thinks of how Aux has changed since the Night Brigade caught him that one time. He leaps to a pursuing vehicle and pulls out their energy source, crashing their vehicle and gaining the energy for himself. Leaping onto the second vehicle, Nomad makes the sharpshooter drop her gun and intimidates the pilot into bringing him close enough to jump onto his original ship before they flee. His red-headed comrade is amazed, but the hovercycle pilot misses his prowess until she glances back and notices one ship fleeing and the other nowhere to be seen.

When his driver makes contact with her base, Nomad finds he can understand, and learns her name is Rebeke. The Charred is Elegy, and the redheaded man is Thomos. Rebeke's radio contact is Zeal. From other language cues, Nomad and Aux surmise that this planet is a Threnodite settlement. They arrive at base, another flying settlement named Beacon. It is less put together than the Cinder King's city. Zeal, who is a little person, orders aid for Thomos and tries to hand off Nomad to a tall fellow named Adonalsium-Will-Remember-Our-Plight-Eventually. Nomad, pretending he does not understand them, follows Zeal and Rebeke down the street to their meeting with the Greater Good.

Nomad sees the Greater Good as Rebeke greets them and discusses the rescue of Elegy and loss of her brother. He acts disrespectful, unsettling the Beaconites. They consider Nomad and his identity, particularly in relation to his status as a potential Sunlit Man. To the group, Zeal presents a Scadrian authorization key recovered during the raid, although the Beaconites appear unaware of its origin. They seem to believe that it will allow them to access lands underneath the surface of the planet, where they will be able to leave without fear of the sun. The Greater Good considers whether the possibility is worth exploring, with Contemplation in particular advocating for it. Nomad, however, is confident that the key would not offer a refuge; instead, it is for a small, exploratory Scadrian research vessel. As they continue to converse, he considers the strange weather patterns on Canticle, regrets his earlier rudeness, and walks through the door into the storm.

He walks through the streets of Beacon, feeling uncomfortable due to painful memories brought by the storm, until he reaches the hovercycle they had come on. He retrieves a rifle, which he had hidden beneath it, and Aux, who had been holding it in place. While there, Nomad considers who he is and who he once had been—unsatisfied with either—as well the culture of Beacon. As he steps away, Nomad notices Wit standing further along the city's rim.
Chapter 10
- Characters
- Plot Summary
As Nomad approaches, he notices that Wit is an illusion, allowed to appear by Aux's reinforcement of Nomad's Connection to him. The two discuss various topics, including Wit initially giving Nomad his Dawnshard, the chase by the Night Brigade, Wit's lack of regard for Nomad, Wit's childhood, the value of the Torment, and the merits of questions and answers. Throughout this, Nomad disparages Wit. Before he fades away, Wit sincerely expresses regret for his actions, surprising Nomad. With Aux, Nomad resolves to help the Beaconites find the door that corresponds to the Scadrian key in order to get a power source that would allow him to Skip offworld. He returns to the building he had left and proposes that they help each other.

They continue to consider the prospect of this Refuge underground. Nomad, at Aux's urging, does mention that it is unlikely that it will be what they expect. However, the Beaconites believe that it is their only hope, and decide to present this idea to the people. Nomad and Aux discuss the outcome of the conversation with Wit, particularly in relation to Nomad's aging. The Greater Good also considers Rebeke's punishment for disobeying, with Nomad interjecting in her defense. He compares its leadership to that of the Cinder King, referencing his long life as the grounds for his understanding of tyranny. Finally, as part of Rebeke's punishment, the Greater Good asks her to fulfill Nomad's requests for accommodations.

Rebeke and Nomad use Rebeke's quadcycle to search for the entrance to the Refuge. Nomad is amazed at the technology used to construct the connected cities, but denies his curiosity to an extent. He surveys the landscape of Canticle, noting that the formations show no evidence of erosion. Rebeke explains that each day, all of the features melt and are reconstructed apart from some very general patterns, leading to Nomad musing about the unlikelihood of the Refuge being a cavern. The two also discuss the history of the Cinder King's rule on Canticle, including the way he slowly developed tyrannical rhetoric and behavior and why the Beaconites are unable to escape to another corridor. Nomad finds the patterns of technological development strange, given the complex nature of the cities compared to the inability to fly over mountains. As Aux wonders why the Cinder King's rule was so bad, Nomad considers this and asks about it. Rebeke tells him about the lottery of people to produce sunhearts and reveals that the quadcycle's power source was her mother, whose soul was turned to stone two weeks prior.

In light of this realization, Nomad is able to re-contextualize what the Cinder King was doing when he first arrived. He also realizes that there must be some other source Investing the sunhearts, as there is no way for a single soul to naturally have over a thousand BEUs of Investiture. Rebeke tells him about how they leave the sunhearts and find them next rotation using prospector ships. Nomad, with Rebeke helping to test, observes that the natives of Canticle are unable to draw heat from him as they can do from each other. This is at odds with the effectiveness of the bracers, something Nomad attributes to their comparative brutality. As they fly, Aux notices a Union scout ship. Although Rebeke wants to go right for it, Nomad advises that they pretend they're doing routine checks to try to gather more information about the scout. He notices that Rebeke seems to be excited at the suggestion of killing the scout, which is strange given the general timidity of the people. Once they are close, Nomad commands that they give chase.

The pair chase the scout, who notices them immediately, into a large lava tube near the ground. Nomad enjoys the flying, with Aux noting that his excitement is out of character. Over the radio, Contemplation advises caution, wanting Rebeke to be safe. Ignoring this, the two separate, and Nomad gets closer to try to make the scout nervous enough to make a mistake. However, the scout gets ahead of him in an open area due to eruptions of lava from Canticle's surface. Before the scout can get away, Rebeke shoots the man off his cycle with her rifle. This is the first time she has killed a person, and she is left dazed. Nomad comforts her with a memory of his own first time. When he talks to Aux in Alethi about his observations, Rebeke asks why he speaks gibberish, which Nomad passes off as a prayer to ancient god. Together, they go to check to make sure the scout is dead.

Nomad searches the corpse and finds a drawing done by a child, which he keeps. Rebeke says that they'll salvage the cycle so they won't have to harvest more metal from the iron fields for the Chorus to use. Nomad notices a blinking light on the cycle's dash for an incoming radio signal, which implies Union knows the scout is down. As they walk towards their cycles, Rebeke says that she doesn't want to be a killer like him, and he simply tells her to remember that. They radio Contemplation, who tells them that Beacon has found the general location of the Refuge and advises that the pair stay and see if anyone comes to check on the scout. Rebeke checks for a sunheart in the cycle, although there isn't one. This is problematic because the Beaconites have been low on power for some time; as it is, they do not have enough to last the rotation that would be required to produce another. As the pair eat, Rebeke observes that Nomad is not from underground, but rather some other planet. They discuss the migration of people from Threnody to Canticle, and Nomad muses about the rise of a ruler like the Cinder King. As they sit, the finally spot a ship checking on the scout, which Rebeke recognizes as the Cinder King's own.

The Cinder King steps out onto the deck of his ship as an invitation, which Nomad accepts alone. After he docks, the Cinder King presents a number of pictorial cards with which to communicate, but Nomad tells him they're no longer needed. The Cinder King states that he'd like to hire Nomad, specifically referencing the practice on Roshar, Nomad's homeworld. As the two drink together, the Cinder King talks about the first offworlder—a Thaylen man from Roshar—he killed. Using the man's translation device, he read a Silverlight guidebook that the man had. The Cinder King believes that he's important and meant to unite and rule his people, the same way that kings and emperors do on Roshar. He hopes that Nomad would appreciate that, but he is mistaken. Nomad notes that the Cinder King is dangerous only because he has power, even if he's not particularly clever or brilliant, and is relieved that he won't feel guilty about killing him. When the Cinder King asks what he wants, Nomad states that he simply wants to be safe, something the Cinder King can't offer. When officials walk in dragging Rebeke and bringing reports of Beacon, the Cinder King begins to put together what happened with the key. He aims his gun at Rebeke and fires, which Nomad deflects using Aux in the form of a metal ball.

The pair try to escape, with Nomad convincing Rebeke to leave behind the other hovercycle that she wanted for materials. Behind them, they see the Cinder King holding the fake key. As they fly away, they radio Contemplation at Beacon, and they realize that the coordinates the Beaconites have are incorrect. At Nomad's urging, Contemplation says she'll discuss retreat with the Greater Good. Once they arrive near Beacon, Nomad and Rebeke see them doing just that. While he ponders the nature of Canticle's flora, they lock the quadcycle in place and see several dozen Union ships flying to attack them.

Nomad lays on the floor healing while the leaders meet and discuss their options, or lack thereof. Ten percent of Beacon was lost in the fight. Confidence takes a doomful stance, and just as Nomad gets up to argue with her, the group affirms, "we go on." Nomad does add that he will kill the Cinder King for making an oath and then breaking it. Nomad asks why the corridor is untenable and learns that there are mountains which are not navigable due to the fact that hover ships can only go fifty feet up before the air is too thin for propulsion and people lose consciousness. This is an effect of the planet's Invested core, which allows for humanoid life despite Canticle having a small diameter and thin atmosphere. Nomad talks to them about propellants, but only one engineer can follow what he's saying, and only partially so. Somehow, the Beaconites have operated without having any theoretical foundation. Confidence challenges him on what his intentions are besides killing the Cinder King and getting to the door. She points out that he's said the door will not help Beacon, but Zeal says it is better than giving in to the tyrant. Nomad requests access to the fabrication facilities and to the charred captive, Elegy, for his research.

Nomad is given Elegy's old room, in which they chain her to a wall, to use as a workshop. Contemplation appears and accedes to Nomad running tests on Elegy, stating that she is already dead and can no longer be hurt. The two touch hands, and no heat is drawn, even when Nomad tries to use the Command, "your Breath become mine," to draw it out. After she leaves, Nomad, with Aux's questioning and commentary, begins working on the problem of the lack of air and thrust for the ships. Nomad thinks to use water for a steam engine, allowing the expulsion of mass in the same manner as space travel. When Aux brings up the way the pair had flown in the past, Nomad recalls how he let the Dawnshard he took from Wit feed on Auxiliary, leaving him in his current state. As he considers the power that seems to pass through the sunhearts, he sketches up a plan while combating the dread that arises from his memories of the scholarly version of himself from the past.

He goes over to Elegy, thinking about the similarities between his Torment and the effects of the Cinder King's fire. He hopes that he can siphon a small portion of his soul into a sunheart, thereby reducing the Torment's effects, and wishes to test a similar technique on Elegy first. Nomad does not succeed, even when he tries nearly all of the Commands he knows to encourage Investiture flow. He even calls Rebeke, who had been listening outside the door, in and tries the ritual prayers that the people of Canticle use to transfer heat. After failing, he gets the schematics and asks for help fabricating the necessary parts, in response to which Rebeke says that their ancestors can do that.

Nomad and Rebeke go to a central ship where they find an aquarium-like enclosure known as the Reliquary. Within it are a number of shades, the collective of which is known as the Chorus. Their behavior is generally erratic, apart from regularly talking about history, the return of Adonalsium, and killing the humans. Rebeke spots one whom she believes to be her brother, and Zeal tells Nomad that they suspect that those who die without being given to the sun become part of the Chorus. Nomad shows the Chorus his designs, and some raw material is lowered into the Reliquary. The Chorus begins building the machinery in a process that takes about forty-five minutes. The precise mechanism is unknown, but Aux suspects it's similar to how he transforms. Nomad thinks about the work that is left in the few hours that they have and talks to Rebeke about his dislike of the title of Sunlit. After the Chorus finishes, they retrieve the prototype parts.

However, with Solemnity Divine, the head of repairs and engineering, and her team iterating on the design, Nomad holds out hope. He also asks her to allocate a work crew to make the ten largest ships airtight so that they can survive while up in the air. He proposes that they put all of the Beaconites in the ships, and that he'll fly them because he can survive without air. After she affirms the plan, Nomad then goes to tell the Greater Good that they'll have to leave most of Beacon behind, other than the large ships and a single prospector. They thank him, and he asks Contemplation about giving heat to a sunheart. She tells him that it must be done with a charged sunheart, not a drained one.

Rebeke tells him that the cinderhearts are somehow different from typical sunhearts and have some sort of Connection to the Cinder King, allowing his control. Rebeke questions what he's doing and how this relates to the engines, and is ignored. Nomad tries the transference prayer again, this time holding the sunheart to Elegy's cinderheart. As he does, she screams, and Rebeke tries to stop him. However, some of the darkness from the cinderheart begins to drain away. As Rebeke angrily scolds him, they hear Elegy speak, telling them to let her go. She has no sense of personal identity or recognition and is confused about the lack of the Cinder King's voice. Nomad is fairly confident that Elegy's memories were burned away, but the Investiture remains, driving her to act aggressively. Seeing this success, he cuts off a piece of the sunheart, tries to do the same with his own blood, and fails. When he hears a click, he sees Rebeke undoing Elegy's chains, and Elegy jumps to attack him.

After asking Nomad to drain more from Elegy's cinderheart, which he does not do, Rebeke goes to get Zeal so they can lock Elegy up again using the original chains. Once she leaves, Elegy asks if Rebeke is really her sister and shows no real regard for her family, only discomfort at Rebeke's expectations. They discuss the urges that come from being highly Invested, and Elegy asks to be freed, which Nomad again refuses. When Rebeke returns with Zeal, they knock Elegy unconscious and rebind her. As this happens, Nomad prepares schematics for guns to be attached to the ships so they can defend themselves after crossing the mountains. They hear a call to gather so the Beaconites can go to their assigned ships and drop the ones they're leaving behind. With Rebeke, Nomad leaves to see the engineers' next iteration of the water-based engines.

Solemnity Divine then asks Nomad about the water freezing, which he tells her is a non-issue, but he does ask her to install heat sinks near the engines. While Nomad watches a work crew detaching ships from the city, he's joined by Contemplation, the pair discuss Elegy's overall goals and doing a test run using the Dawnchaser. Nomad tells Contemplation a fictional story about the Tagarut on Roshar who tried to conquer the world, and eventually the sun. The sun burned them, destroying their forces and lightening the color of their eyes. After that, the Tagarut finally began to speak and gain a measure of civilization. Nomad presents the story as a whimsical one without a moral, the kind he prefers. As he and Contemplation step back from the dropping ships, a child notices a new star in the sky, which Nomad recognizes as the warship of the Night Brigade.

After working with the engineers to modify his hovercycle with the new steam engines, Nomad flies up the mountainside alone into the darkness. He doesn't notice the air temperature due to his protections, but is aware of the elevation because of the snow. As they ascend, Nomad and Aux consider how they'll find the Refuge, the former noting that they know the corridor and that the Cinder King does know the location, a fact which they can utilize. Meanwhile, Nomad notes that they're about halfway through the climb and have not yet activated the new engine. As they continue talking, they worry about the true nature of the Refuge and their inability to help the Beaconites find a home safe from the sun. Once Nomad is unable to breathe and speak, and the old, air-based engine starts to fail, he engages the new system, which works perfectly.
Nomad reaches the snow-less summit and settles down, looking over the landscape of Canticle and then up at the stars, trying and failing to find Taln's Scar. While there, Aux reminds him of his first interaction with the Night Brigade, when he turned himself in. He had naïvely assumed that they wouldn't be interested in him because he no longer was the Dawnshard, unaware that they could fashion a spike that would lead them to it. Aux reminisces about the way that Nomad has changed in a positive light. Nomad, not proud of who he is, is surprised, and believes that Aux is mistaken. He reactivates the steam jet and descends toward Beacon, where they've finished the ship modifications.

Jeffrey Jeffrey shows Nomad how to pilot his ship. The ship is attached on top of Beacon's hub, where the Chorus is located, with the others arranged in a circle around the hub. Jeffrey Jeffrey offers to stay in Nomad's partially sealed room and help him pilot, but Nomad refuses. Elegy is to remain on Nomad's ship, surviving using her Investiture. Once Jeffrey Jeffrey leaves and the doors close, Nomad starts Beacon upwards. Nomad and Aux again reflect on the former's past, his current leadership position within Beacon, and his past experiences in positions of command. While they talk, Elegy interjects, asking Nomad about the voice inside his head, and Nomad tells her about Aux. She also asks about his urge to fight, and Nomad asks her what fighting would accomplish. He tells her that she must find a deeper reason to live, and when she questions why he lives, he responds that he first lived for his friends, then to protect the cosmere, and now to run. The trio continue to ascend in silence after Nomad switches to the new steam engines. After a half hour or so, he notices that they're moving more slowly than projected, and eventually the ship stops accelerating. For a moment, he worries that he's sentenced the Beaconites to their deaths, until he remembers the extra weight from the empty water-carrying ships. Nomad jettisons the first, which speeds up the acceleration, but when he tries to do the same for the second, he finds that the mechanism is jammed and resolves to go out and do it by hand.

- Plot Summary
Nomad opens the sealed door of the ship and steps out after informing Elegy that the period when the door is open would be dangerous for her and reminding Aux that Nomad won't be able to speak outside given the lack of air. He momentarily recalls when his bond with Aux was strong enough that they were able to mentally speak, but that had been lost when Aux mostly died. Nomad runs to the empty water-carrying ship and sees that the release mechanism is covered in ice, preventing the ship from unlatching. Using Aux as a crowbar, he unlatches all of the locks on the deck. The ones underneath, however, are likely still iced over, and thus the ship does not fall.
After fashioning Aux into a chain with hooks on both ends, Nomad uses him to dangle just below the city and plans to traverse the underside to reach the latches of the release mechanism. As he moves along the bottom, he swings with one hand to try to move forward, and the other nearly comes loose. As first light approaches, Aux offers to become a short-lived power source so that Nomad can fly once again. Nomad immediately shuts down this idea and climbs the chain until he's in a more secure position. He starts again and finally reaches the latches. Using a towline he had taken from the hovercycle, he ties himself in place. Then he forms Aux into a large pole and tries to wedge the latch free, but with the angle and friction, he's unable to do so. The ship approaches the mountain, about to crash, and, thinking of the crowbar as a tool to protect the city, is able to sharpen the end and break the latch despite his Torment. The weight of the ship causes the rest of the latches to break, and the empty ship tumbles down the mountainside.
Using Aux, he gets back on the perimeter of Beacon and watches as the ship rises more quickly, first grinding against the mountainside and then properly flying. Ascending uncontrolled, they leave the shadow of the planet and are hit by ordinary, warm sunlight. Everything above seems entirely unaffected by the raging effects that appear below, and Nomad is not able to understand why this is the case. His pondering is cut short by Beacon stopping and then beginning to descend after running out of propellant.

Nomad engages the emergency release, unsealing the doors and allowing the Beaconites to exit; ensures that Elegy is alive; and checks that the Reliquary is unbroken and safely closed. Checking on the status of the ships, he finds that two have leaked, and that there are several injuries, but no dead. He meets Rebeke, who is also amazed that the plan worked, and they go to meet the engineers. Solemnity Divine tells them, the Greater Good, Jeffrey Jeffrey, and Zeal that while there is major damage, they might be able to fix it in the two and a half hours that they have. However, because most of the sunhearts are depleted, they will not be able to fly. The group considers a plan to use the single prospector to collect the sunhearts of the Beaconites that the Cinder King left to retrieve next rotation. After being told about the great maelstrom, Nomad proposes that they go into it and retrieve the sunhearts before the Cinder King gets there. Most of them immediately rebuff the idea, but Zeal resolves to do it, accepting the day as one for risks.

Zeal's team quickly gathers, with the plan being for them to fly into the storm, Nomad to exit the ship to harvest the sunhearts, and the rest of them to wait as backup. Elegy is still tied up in the corner and wakes, calming when she sees Nomad. Rebeke thanks Nomad for letting her come along and asks him to teach her to become a killer. He tells her that combat training is largely learning to circumvent your conscience and make killing instinctive, rather than conscious, and that she doesn't need to be a killer to be respected. He tells her that Elegy is getting better, and Rebeke tells him that the sliver of sunheart on the dash is a piece of her mother's soul. Nomad takes it and reasons with Aux, thinking about the innate Connection that the people of Canticle have and how that means he can't siphon off his Torment the way he did the Cinder King's influence from Elegy. Admiring the team's ability to remain lighthearted in the face of destruction, he talks with Elegy about her identity and gives her the sunheart sliver along with the Command necessary to siphon off a little more of her soul if necessary. Hearing thunder, Nomad returns to the cab and sees the burning maelstrom.

Nomad is surprised that the maelstrom is a storm of fiery vortexes, having expected it to be made of wind and rain, and notes that it seems akin to many planets' ideas of hell. He notices that the ground right behind it cools quickly, as if Canticle's core is incredibly Invested and drawing in the heat. Nomad reminisces about the rain on Roshar as they enter the maelstrom and are tossed around. Aux hears the prospector beeping, and they find the location of the sunhearts. Nomad exits the ship and almost immediately loses sight of it. He forms Aux into a spade and starts digging. Healing in this environment brings him quickly below five percent Skip capacity, and he loses sensation due to burned nerve endings. Nomad gives up digging, gets as close to the ground as possible, and fashions Aux into a shield above him. Analyzing the land, he begins to lose hope, considering himself a runner and a failure. When he eventually starts to heal and feel pain again, he realizes that he can hear the rain and must be back in the shadow. Nomad breaks out of the earth, healed and determined to take the sunhearts when the Cinder King's ships arrive.

Unable to fight with the large troop numbers, Nomad sneaks aboard a ship with a vault and uses Aux to create a false cabinet for hiding. Once some workers deposit the sunhearts into drawers and leave, he uses Aux as a crowbar to collect the five that he can find. When Nomad tries to leave, however, he finds the vault door locked, and he is unable to create a tool to open it because of his Torment. After a few minutes being stuck, the vault door opens from the outside, and he sees Zeal standing there.

Stalling, Nomad talks with the Cinder King about the latter's obsession with power and the sick Rosharan he had turned into a sunheart. At the mention of it, Nomad realizes that he likely could siphon off some of his soul into that sunheart because of their shared Connection to Roshar and runs to the Cinder King's ship to get it. When he retrieves it and invokes the necessary Command, part of his Torment begins to transfer. Nomad runs to the Dawnchaser, and when one of the Charred attacking it targets him, punches them.

When the team arrives, the pieces of sunheart are distributed between the ships. Above them, the peaks of the mountains appear to be aflame and liquefying, and only the mountain's shadow protects them. Almost immediately, the convoy begins to race forward, hoping that they'll leave the mountain's shadow before the sun overhead reaches its end. While Nomad is on the lead ship, he notices that the final ship is struggling, unable to keep up. At the same time, he and Aux notice a small fragment of his armor, which Aux had thought was gone, and they're unsure why it has returned. When Aux tells him that he has six percent Skip capacity, Nomad leaps from ship to ship towards the final one as the sunlight breaks around the peaks. Using all of his remaining Investiture, he forms Aux into a massive shield big enough to shelter the ship, and the fire of the sun washes around it as the ship races into the shadow.
After they pass into the shadow, Nomad slumps, without any Investiture. With Aux, he finally figures out that the reason for the destructive sunlight is that anything between the sun and the core of the planet acts like the filament of a light bulb and is superheated by the energy transfer. He again becomes aware of his surroundings when he hears cheers from the front of the convoy, and sees the people on this final ship rattled by the near-death experience. Contemplation, who's been on this ship, thanks him. Nomad remains in a stupor the Beaconites land and pray in a tearful, genuine manner. When they're finished, the Greater Good gathers in the center, and waves him forward. There, they give him the name Zellion, the One Who Finds, after the original Lodestar. He accepts their welcome and is Connected to Canticle. Each of the Beaconites impart warmth in thanks. At the Greater Good's prompting, he tells them he has a plan but asks for a moment to process first.

As he's frustrated about Beacon's future, Rebeke approaches, offering a new jacket and thanks. She tries to give him warmth, but he refuses, knowing that she wants to do more, for them to find comfort in one another. Zellion will not because he is far older and his inevitable departure will hurt, even if Rebeke claims that neither matters. She asks him to stay and offers to help him fight the Night Brigade, which he immediately disregards. Rebeke tells Zellion that she no longer wants to kill like him, even if it is beautiful. He takes issue with that descriptor, explaining that he was, at different times, a knight of two exclusive orders. When he was given Wit's Dawnshard and terrible things happened, he was forced to critically consider the core idea of an honorable soldier, and thus can never see his fighting as beautiful again. When Rebeke again brings up the Refuge, Zellion again tries to tell her that it won't be what she wants, but she doesn't want to hear it in order to maintain hope. He tells her to maintain hope in something real, such as toppling the Cinder King's rule, but when Rebeke says that the Refuge is their only hope, he claims they'll show the Cinder King what a real battle is.

Beacon is arranged in a vulnerable structure, with the four gunships surrounding the four passenger ships. As the Union forces attack the gunships, Rebeke drops them on Zeal's ship, where they engage several Charred. When they jump to the next ship, the Charred unexpectedly scatter, and Zellion notices that several bombs have been placed. Although they manage to jump onto the Dawnchaser in time, the ship, pilot, and copilot are destroyed. The pair split up, moving to ensure that no more bombs are placed. While Zellion and Elegy are able to effectively protect two of the three remaining ships, they see an explosion on the one piloted by Jeffrey Jeffrey alone. Although the ship is no longer usable, he grabs Jeffrey Jeffrey and uses Aux in shield form to harness the upward force of an exploding bomb to get onto the Dawnchaser. Around himself, Zellion sees around ten fragments of light-reflecting armor, formed from two different kinds of spren, floating around him. As he prepares for the next fight, he notices that the Cinder King's entourage has landed in a circle on the ground, surrounding what Rebeke confirms to be the Refuge.

From one of the other ships, Zellion commands the rest of Beacon to be ready to descend and uses his gunship to force the Union forces to scatter. Rebeke uncovers the door to the Refuge, and the rest of the Beaconites run for it. When Zellion is at the door, Zeal tosses him the key, but he gives it back. Then, he speaks to the door and invokes an interplanetary bill to request asylum. A voice offers to negotiate, allowing Zellion to bring three people down, but he first requests protection, and a blast of energy towards the Cinder King's forces delivers a clear message. After they descend, and the door opens, Zellion sees the interior of a spaceship intended for scientific research and large enough for a crew of two dozen people. It could potentially manage to support the population of Beacon, but it would strain their resources. He is approached by a man and a woman, whom he recognizes as Scadrian TimeTellers. They ask him questions about himself, including whether he's said the oaths, if he can fight, and how he reached Canticle. Zellion lies, and they try to hire him as a mercenary. He refuses, and when Rebeke pleads for help, the woman seems amused and denies the request. When Zellion tries to appeal to their consciences, he finds that they've been working with the Cinder King, and they don't seem to care about the problems of Canticle's people. In the room, he sees a jar of Dor, a type of purified Investiture which would allow him to Skip and leave Canticle. Despite the pleas of both Zellion and the Beaconites, the TimeTellers deny them all, leaving open their offer to Zellion. As the Beaconites ascend back to the surface, he stays, letting himself sit and rest.

- Plot Summary
As Nomad sits, he hears his own thoughts. He is next to the jar of Dor, but cannot steal it yet, knowing that the TimeTellers will be watching him. He hears a voice say that the ship in orbit is the Night Brigade, and another decides not to contact them and hope their purpose is unrelated. He years yet another voice comment on ship-to-ship guns, watching the battle on the surface, and when Nomad looks, he sees the people of Beacon finally surrender. Stumbling back, he whispers his old oaths, and nothing happens. When Aux asks for the reason he abandoned them, Nomad says that he doesn't know, and even if it seems uncharacteristic of him now, the consequences stand. He wants to leave and help them, but cannot, because capture by the Night Brigade could lead to the deaths of millions. He looks up to see why the room has fallen silent, and sees the Charred retreating towards Union, having taken the sunhearts and leaving all of the Beaconites to die.
A nearby scientist hears Nomad talking to Aux and asks about it, but he passes it off as a habit and asks about her work. She is working on transferring Investiture between sunhearts, and mentions that they have recharged one. As he asks about it, saying that the people of Canticle have tried it before with used sunhearts, he puzzles out that there needs to be some resistance within them to recharge, something a fully-used sunheart lacks. The scientists tells Nomad that heat from a person from Canticle works, and also tells him that cinderhearts are created in a similar manner but with a special type of Investiture. As he realizes this would solve most of the Beaconites' problems and resolves to tell them, pieces of his armor again appear, and the woman realizes that he is the Rosharan being chased by the Night Brigade.
Nomad is Pushed backward by his metal belt buckle, and the scientist tells everyone his identity. He rips off of his belt, summons Aux, and threatens the group, forcing them to activate the elevator to the surface. Nomad begins to run toward Beacon immediately as he reaches the surface, but he is unable to outrun the light. Aux tells him that to do it, he must fly; Nomad responds that he cannot. Aux reminds him that he is a better person than he pretends to be and offers to burn away his soul to give Nomad the power. Despite Nomad's protests, Aux does so, with a final message invoking the ideals of the Knights Radiant. As Aux's soul is burnt away, Nomad is left with a familiar power; Aux's body, the blade; and his armor. As the sun breaks the horizon, his eyes come alight.

Elegy stands with six other Charred, having fooled them into believing the Cinder King still has control over her. Claiming to be the true ruler of Beacon, with the Greater Good as figureheads, Rebeke begs for the Cinder King to let them serve him, rather than die. He plays along, seeming to believe the lies, but refuses. Rebeke then suggests that he bring the others here to watch her die, in order to make them suffer. He almost agrees until he sees the pain in her eyes at the thought of their deaths. As he explains that to be persuaded by her would give her power over him, Rebeke finally tries to attack him physically, but a Charred easily stops her. The Cinder King tells her that because she was their leader, he'll turn her into a Charred, but then he turns and squints in the direction of the sun. As the Beaconites huddle on the ground, they watch the advancing flames out of which Zellion flies, high in the sky, glowing and framed by a symbol arranged in the fiery light.

When she does the latter, Zellion slots it into the back of Aux in shield form. The new power lets it grow into a massive, reflective dome. When Contemplation asks about it, he tells her the secret of recharging sunhearts. As she frees another, both start attacking the other Charred. Distracted, the Cinder King tries to fire at the Dawnchaser and misses. He orders some Charred to attack Elegy, and as others arrive, she ends up fighting off four. The Cinder King holds Rebeke, taking her heat and threatening to turn her into a Charred. Frustrated and angry, Elegy fights back, but the Cinder King and his officials walk away with Rebeke. As numerous other Charred show up, Elegy runs away along the rim of Union. Climbing onto the rooftops, Elegy delays them and then returns to the starting point to retrieve her sunheart sliver. She runs to an open portion of deck, where Zellion lands as the Charred approach. Once the street falls still, they move towards the Hall of Burning at Union's center, the place where Charred are made. As they arrive, they see the Cinder King waiting. A pre-recorded message in the Cinder King's voice blares throughout the city, offering a chance to watch the Sunlit Man fall. After unlatching a false bracer from Zellion's wrist to make the battle appear fair, the Cinder King attacks. Elegy leaps across, breaking Rebeke free, but the damage has been done, and Elegy feels the fire consuming everything. Unable to quickly find the sunheart sliver, Elegy invokes the heat transfer Command and draws some of the warmth from Rebeke into herself. The process burns away her final memories from before she became Charred. As Elegy pulls away, she sees that the cinderheart has stopped sinking into Rebeke's chest, and she wakes. Elegy checks on the guards, and Rebeke realizes she feels the Charred and is able to influence them, although the degree to which she can do so is limited because of the Cinder King's stronger influence. Zellion
A bloodied mess, Zellion rolls across Union's deck. Wondering how he could beat the Cinder King without being able to fight back, he recalls the effects of his Torment. He grapples the Cinder King, keeping hold as best he can. When the Cinder King touches Zellion's face, he is surprised by the heat transfer. Using the extra weight from the Scadrian device, Zellion topples them both off of the deck, and they hit the ground below. Once they both stand, the Cinder King attacks again and again, and each time, Zellion rises.
Elegy
Back on Union, Rebeke and Elegy enter the command center. Because of Rebeke's influence, the guards simply step aside, letting them pass. A set of officers inside are watching security footage of the fight between the Cinder King and Zellion, and once the sisters enter, one of the officers recognizes them. Rebeke asks Elegy to try to take persuade them, but Elegy is unable to do so without her memories from before becoming Charred. Instead, Rebeke uses the footage to show them how weak the Cinder King is, giving them the choice to abandon him and create their own society. That, along with the secret to recharging sunhearts, convinces them to fly away and they leave the Cinder King behind. When Elegy brings up Zellion, however, they cannot send a ship for him—without the Cinder King to unlock Union, no ship can separate from the city, and the Dawnchaser can no longer fly. Elegy
After one rotation, Elegy drops from the ship to the sunken muddy pit that holds all of the Beaconites, who survived a full half rotation in the sun. As the Greater Good boards the ship, they recognize Rebeke's position as the Sunlit One. Rebeke tells them what happened to Zellion and the Cinder King and that they've made contact with people from the other corridors to tell them how to recharge sunhearts. When Contemplation shows deference to her, however, Rebeke leaves the mantle of leadership with them, only planning to be a symbol and work to slowly wake up the Charred. As Elegy muses about her future, the city rises and flies forward to new adventures.
Truth-Is-Waiting
Staff Sergeant Truth-Is-Waiting of the Night Brigade leaves a conference with the people of the floating city where he pretended to be part of a delegation from another corridor. In a stolen ship, he meets several other members of the Night Brigade—most prominently its leader, the Admiral. In his report, he dismisses any further pursuits with the city as useless. Truth-Is-Waiting does note the Scadrian research vessel, which the Admiral orders that they should ask for their recordings. As Truth-Is-Waiting exits, the shades in the room do so as well, leaving the Admiral alone and unhappy that their prey slipped away.
Zellion
On the beach, Zellion feels strange in the ordinary sun after seeing Canticle's. He marks the passing of time on the sand, waiting until he can resummon Aux's body and release the dome around the Beaconites. At his best guess, he does so, leaving the question of whether he was right or if he had sentenced them to their deaths. Without Aux, he has only silence as an answer. In the distance, he spots a boat near the atoll he appeared on and signals to them using Aux as a mirrored shield. Wading out to meet the Sho Del aboard, Zellion begins running again.
