The Rithmatist is a Young Adult novel by Brandon Sanderson published in May 2013 by Tor after the publication of A Memory of Light.[1]

Summary

Joel Saxon, a non-Rithmatic student at Armedius Academy, living at the campus with his mother who is working as a cleaning lady. Joel's father was the academy's chalkmaker and died eight years ago by accident. Armedius Academy was one of eight Rithmatics schools in the United Isles of America. It's located in Jamestown on New Britannia.

Joel didn't become a Rithmatist but he fiercely whishes to be one as for Rithmatics were his greatest interest. On the other side there was Melody Muns, who became a Rithmatist but was trying to get out of this responsibility. She was not good in Rithmatic lines and circles and therefore had to do a remedial tutelage with Professor Fitch during summer holidays. Professor Fitch was challenged by a young professor, Professor Nalizar, and lost that duel, so that Nalizar got the tenure of Professor Fitch, what left him without much work for the summer.

The Rithmatist is about the disappearance of Rithmatic students from Armedius Academy in Jamestown on New Britannia. When these disappearances begun, Principal York put Professor Fitch on the task to discover what happened. For his help, Principal York assigned him Joel. Other than Professor Fitch and Joel there was the federal inspector Harding who lead the investigations and secured the area of Armedius Academy as for the incidents all happened outside the academy. At all the crime scenes strange patterns were found. As for there were only four Rithmatic lines known, this new lines were extremely disturbing. Professor Fitch and Joel figured out that at least one of the two lines where Rithmatic, but weren't able to make replicas work. Joel thought that pattern felt familiar to him. When Joel reported to Principal York, he too felt that patterns familiar, what made Joel remember where he knew that new line from. After his father died, his mother and Joel left their old rooms but they were kept closed and unused all the time. Now Joel went there and found that line between the studies of his father along with other interesting things. But, again, they couldn't figure out what that line did. Aside from that, Joel and his mother went back to their old room. In this very night Joel was attacked by chalklings, the first non-Rithmatist-victim. When he tried to cry for help he found him impossible to do so. He also found that strange line near him, and figured out that it sucked in sound. Joel managed to run from the chalklings, seeking shelter at the office. Exton, the clerk and a cast off Rithmatist, helped Joel when he fell. Then Joel managed to escape to the gates of the academy where policeman waited. After this incident the clerk Exton was arrested. Inspector Harding said he found evidences in Exton's desk, and even Professor Fitch seemed convinced. Joel, however, didn't believe that Exton was the perpetrator. The next night Joel and Melody were confused because there were no police patrols. When they went to Melody's dormitory, they found the guarding police men unconscious on the ground. Joel sent Melody to look for help while he sneaked into the dorm. There he found Professor Nalizar and put him out of action, only to discover that not Nalizar was the culprit. With Melody returning and Professor Fitch catching up they could defeat the real culprit.

Finally that danger was defeated and normalcy came back to Armedius Academy, though still not everything is what it seems. The evil wasn't beaten yet.
