The Palanaeum is the largest known library on Roshar, holding over seven hundred thousand texts on various subjects.[1] It is made up of two rooms, an antechamber known as The Veil and a storehouse known as The Palanaeum proper.[1] Varas is the assistant chief of collections and a distant cousin of Khabranth's king, Taravangian.[2]

Location

The Palanaeum is located within Kharbranthian Conclave, deep within mountain that surrounds the city, and access to it is carefully controlled.[1] The pyramid-like caverns that form the rooms of the Palanaeum predate the city of Kharbranth, however, the smaller rooms that house the manuscripts and books were cut into the stone post settlement.[1][3] How the caverns were created is unknown, however, some believe that it was the work of the dawnsingers.[1]

Use and Admittance

Entrance to the Palanaeum Proper requires a chit of of admittance to the sum of one thousand sapphire broams, which also allows for use of the Veil.[1] Alcoves in the Veil can also be rented for ongoing use for two skymarks.[4] Payment to access the Palanaeum is used to fund the hospitals of Kharbranth.[1] Once admittance has been paid, the Palanaeum Proper is available to access at anytime.[5]

The Palanaeum also doubles as Kharbranth's royal treasury, and the city's store of emeralds are used to light the pathways within the Palanaeum proper.[6] The Devotary of Insight is in charge of switching out the gemstones so they can be renewed with stormlight during the Highstorm.[6]

The organisational system used within the Palanaeum filing system is standard across many of Roshar's libraries and archives.[6] Patron's are free to locate and collect books and documentation themselves if they wish, however, ardents and servants are available to collect materials when requested.[6] Additionally, ardents will reshelve books that are no longer needed for use.[3] Books can be removed from the Palanaeum, however, they are not to be taken into the Conclave's bathing chambers.[5] Many of the books stored in the Palanaeum have been tampered with, with changes having been made during the Heirocracy.[7]

History

Early History

It is possible that the original Palaneum had been subject to a fire at one point, with texts such as the autobiography of Terxim being mostly lost.[8]

1773

Jasnah Kholin traveled to Kharbranth in the year 1773 to continue her research into the Voidbringers and Urithiru. She was granted access to the library by King Taravangian after assisting in the rescue of his granddaughter who had been trapped within the Conclave by a cave-in. During her time in Kharbranth, Jasnah adopted Shallan Davar as her ward, having her use the Palanaeum to continue her training and study as a scholar.

During the same year, a team of researchers began working on the translation of the Dawnchant, using information gained from Dalinar Kholin's visions. Progress updates were periodically sent from the researchers to Kadash, an ardent of Dalinar Kholin. A second team of researchers, based in the Jokasha Monastery in Jah Keved, also began translation of the Dawnchant around this time. Taravangian

Following the coming of the Everstorm, the Palanaeum was inundated with requests from across Roshar, for information regarding the Voidbringers.[9] Jasnah used the Palanaeum for her research on the Voidbringers, yet found many of the texts tampered with from the Hierocracy.[7]

[9] After the coming of the Everstorm and the transformation of the parshmen, the Palanaeum was inundated with requests from all across Roshar for information on the Voidbringers. Navani sought out the Palanaeum to find information on the Old Magic but found it difficult to get time from the researchers. She found at least 300 cases of the Old Magic in the library and in each one the curse and boon lasted until the persons death.

[11] Kadash has a spanreed that connects directly to the leader of Vorinism in Kharbranth and the Vorin research team at the Palanaeum . After Navani realised that Dalinar had helped translate part of the dawnchant through his vision, she sent her work to the Palanaeum to be worked on further by the Vorin researchers. The researchers send translated sections to Kadash periodically.

[12] The ardents in the Holy Enclave also worked on the dawnchant translation and were ahead of the scholars in Kharbranth on their translation.

[9] Taravangian along with a consort of people including Malata and Adrotagia, Kharbranth's head scribe, arrived at Urithiru. Prior to the visit, Navani got in contact with the Palanaeum as she was after information on the NIghtwatcher and the boon and curse. She had difficulty as ever since the Everstorm, the Palanaeum had been inundated with requests for research into the Voidbringers. Taravangian's visit to Urithiru, as well as a favour owed to her, got Navani access to the information she had been after. There are at least 300 cases that Navani knows of, of the boon/curse, from the Palanaeum.

Structure

The Veil

The Veil is accessible from the Conclave and lies behind a pair of steel doors, intricately carved with a chart that is made up of circular and linear geometric pattern, as well as glyphs. The sides of the expansive room are smooth and incredibly tall, pocketed with small private balconies. The room is dark, with only small pockets of light from spheres that people use in the alcoves.[1]

Elevators manned by multiple parshman are used to access the different levels within the Veil, with hallways carved into the stone surrounding the room allowing for access to the alcoves. Alcoves are turret shaped, with a large desk connected to the curved rim of the waist high balcony. A wooden railing runs along the top of the stone wall.[1]

(added) - The door to the Veil is an intricate geometric design that incorporates circles, lines and glyph's and creates a chart, split across the two doors. (added) - There are stone shafts around the room with manually controlled elevators set into them to take people to the different levels. Four Parshmen are needed to operate these elevators (added) - The balconies can be accessed through hallways set into the stone surrounding the room. (added) - They are round like a turret, with a waist high stone rim and topped with a wooden railing. (added) - Desks connect to the rim of the balcony and follow the curved shape. (added)

The Palanaeum proper

The Palanaeum proper can be accessed from inside the Veil, through a smaller chamber that is filled with soulcast crystal partitions.[1] Past these crystals is a large cavern shaped like an inverted pyramid, with a walkway running down along the walls forming a giant square spiral.[6] This walkway extends down 57 levels, and at the bottom of the room is a large infused diamond that marks the point of the inverted pyramid and aligns with the nadir.[3] A system of parshman worked lifts are available for use to access the various floors, though multiple lifts are needed to reach the lower floors.[3]

Filing cabinets found on the top level of the Palanaeum proper contain an index of the material within the library, based on the date that they entered the Palanaeum.[6] Books and documentation are stored within smaller rooms that have been carved into the rock of the Palanaeum proper.[6] These rooms contain tall bookshelves, each with a symbol carved on the end reflecting the date the documentation was received.[6] Troughs containing a moisture absorbing powder can also be found within these rooms to control humidity levels.[6]
