As the daughter of "The Coward of Alta", Spensa was looked down upon by her fellow Defiants. As a result, she acted fiercely when confronted by others and used intimidation as a defense mechanism. Spensa would often lash out at people who threatened her and even those who didn't, using a wide and somewhat graphic vocabulary inspired by stories of glorious heroes from Earth that her grandmother told her. She was certain that her father was not a coward like everyone thought, and she was bent on proving it by seeming as 'brave' as possible. However, she believed that bravery was about being the most daring warrior and to never show fear. In her time in Flight School, she came to realize that being brave wasn't as simple as she thought. Spensa went to Flight School the next day, befriending a girl named Kimmalyn.{{book ref|skyward|5}} The training room had several flight simulators, and Spensa met the rest of her flight. She instantly disliked Jorgen, who is rich and priveleged. Cobb made Jorgen flight leader, which outraged Spensa.{{book ref|skyward|9}} The cadets spent hours practicing takeoff and landing in the simulators, and afterward an alarm went off. They were called to head towards the battle because Nightmare Flight was down in the caverns. They weren’t supposed to engage in combat, just hover near the city and look threatening. But when a Krell ship went towards the city they engaged. Kimmalyn managed to snipe the Krell fighter and destroy it, and Skyward Flight went back to the surface.{{book ref|skyward|11}}

Spensa was forced to sleep in her cave with the broken ship, and to make the long commute between there and the Flight School. Because she was forbidden to eat at the Flight School, Spensa was forced to hunt for rats and mushrooms in the caves to feed herself. Still, she didn’t complain, knowing that Admiral Ironsides would take any chance to see her ejected. She tried to connect power to the ship, but her light line’s power matrix was too weak.{{book ref|skyward|12}} When she arrived at flight school the next day, she found that her friend Rig was quitting.{{book ref|skyward|13}} Spensa and the other cadets spent hours upon hours practicing maneuvers before letting them try destructors, as well as teaching them to use light-lances. Spensa also discovered that her helmet contains sensors to monitor her bioreadings. They engaged in a competition with their light-lances organized by Cobb, in which Spensa and Jorgen competed fiercely. They grew angry at each other after Jorgen revealed that Spensa’s father is Chaser, the infamous coward. At the end of the day, Spensa stole the power matrix from Jorgen’s hovercar.{{book ref|skyward|15}}

The next day Spensa hooked up the power matrix to the ship, and it powered up. She discovered that the ship could talk, as it harbored a very advanced AI. It introduced itself as M-Bot, a long-distance stealth ship. M-Bot’s data banks had been mostly corrupted, but he knew his last orders, which were to lie low and not get into any fights. Most of his systems were offline, with only a few like communications still working. Since Spensa couldn’t fix M-Bot on her own, she recruited Rig to help her, who was still deciding on what he wanted to do, now that he wouldn’t be a pilot.{{book ref|skyward|17}} He was amazed and energized by the sight of the ship, and decided to get a job at the Engineering Corps so he could help fix it.{{book ref|skyward|18}}

When Spensa was in her cave, M-Bot’s sensors picked up a large force of Krell inbound, and Spensa hurried back to Alta Base. She arrived late to the battle, and joined the dogfight with the Krell. Morningtide died in battle, and soon after Bim got shot down as well.{{book ref|skyward|19}} Spensa and the others in Skyward Flight were still in shock the next day, and Cobb pushed them hard in training to keep them busy. Spensa later found Cobb watching a replay of the battle, and learned that Cobb had been the one to shoot down her father. Once Skyward Flight was proficient with the light-lances, Cobb had them move on to learning how to use the IMP. During the course of their training, M-Bot created a private communication to Spensa using his abilities as a stealth and reconnaissance ship, and allowing them to talk privately during the course of her training. Tensions between Jorgen and Spensa grew, until Spensa grew so enraged that she attacked him, shocking the other cadets. Spensa quickly fled, dreading her imminent expulsion as soon as Jorgen told Ironsides of her actions. She eventually went to Ironside’s office to confess, but then found that Jorgen didn’t turn her in. Jorgen told her that they couldn’t afford to lose another pilot, and apologized. Spensa participated in a large skirmish over a large falling shipyard, which was home to many large sources of acclivity stone. With Spensa’s help, Rig managed to get some of M-Bot’s basic functions to work, and Spensa used her light lance to open up the cavern ceiling. She flew M-Bot out into the open, and was amazed at how incredibly sensitive and incredible the flight was, even though M-Bot didn’t have a booster.{{book ref|sf1|30}} At training, they practiced defending against lifebusters, using a modified recording of a previous battle. Spensa realized that the DDF must have the recording of the true Battle of Alta hidden away somewhere.{{book ref|skyward|31}} A large force of Krell came down through the platforms, and Skyward Flight was called into battle again. During the course of the battle Hurl’s shield was overwhelmed and her ship was severely damaged. She went into an out of control descent, and was supposed to eject per Cobb’s instructions. She refused to be a “coward” however, refusing to eject and crashing. After the battle, Skyward Flight was given mandatory leave, and Kimmalyn quit Flight School. Spensa found out where Hurl crashed, and decided to go give Hurl a proper pilot’s funeral.{{book ref|skyward|33}} Jorgen joined her, recovering Hurl’s pilot pin and giving her a short funeral.{{book ref|skyward|34}} Spensa took the booster from Hurl’s ship, and Jorgen figured out that she is building a starship.{{book ref|skyward|35}}

On her way back to M-Bot after getting the recording, FM brought Spensa to a restaurant with some members and former members of the flight. Spensa realized that it was her perfect oppurtinuty to go to Starsight in Alanik’s place, using holographic technology that M-Bot had to disguise her as Alanik. Hesho was angry at Spensa’s betrayal and wanted to shoot her down, but his crew overruled him, joining with Spensa. Spensa told Cobb to power down all comms on Platform Prime, and she, Vapor, and Hesho’s ship chased after Brade. They were able to disable Brade’s ship, but not before she succeeded in summoning the delver, which emerged into the system. Spensa, in a moment of desperation, redirected the Delver, getting it to go destroy Starsight instead of Detritus.{{book ref|sky2|41}} Hesho’s ship had taken damage from their dogfight with Brade, and Kauri told Spensa that Hesho was dead. Spensa hyperjumped Vapor and Kauri back to Starsight, though Kauri’s ship had sustained too much damage to be able to fight. Spensa and Vapor entered the delver’s maze, chasing after Brade, and evading the embers it shot at them. Spensa and Vapor got seperated, but Spensa was rescued by the arrival of Morriumur, whose dual nature allowed her to combat the hallucinations the delver projected. Morriumur carried Spensa to safety, dropping her into the heart of the delver alone.{{book ref|sky2|22}}

In a completely white room, Spensa communicated with the delver, who took her own shape before her. She saw the delver’s point of view, which saw the humans on Starsight as annoying noises. Spensa showed the delver her own point of view, how the humans cared for their children and had friends and families. The delver was horrified at the revelation, not having realized that the noises were alive. After being rescued and treated in a Superiority hospital on Starsight, and was greeted by Cuna, who had begun making overtures of peace with the humans.{{book ref|sky2|epilogue}} Winzik’s soldiers came for Spensa and Cuna suddenly, Spensa helping herself and Cuna escape, hiding Cuna in a closet. Spensa ran into Brade, who saved her from a Superiority aircraft and asked her to join with Winzik’s coup. Spensa ran instead, finding M-Bot, who had been completely destroyed by Superiority scientists. She found that M-Bot had managed to slowly changed his programming, copying himself into the body of a cleaning drone. With more of Winzik’s soldiers on the way, Spensa lead M-Bot and Doomslug towards the location of Starsight’s nowhere portal, which she had seen before., she touched it, pulling herself and them into the nowhere.{{book ref|sky2|45}}

They emerged from the nowhere portal into a jungle. M-Bot was angry at Spensa for abandoning him at Starsight, and flew off into the jungle. Alone, Spensa went through her supplies, then heard a cytonic voice speaking to her. She was suddenly attacked by a group of pirates, who defeated her and took her father’s pin, which had mysteriously appeared in Spensa’s flight jacket pocket. Spensa was tied up, and eventually rescued by M-Bot. They, in turn, were rescued by the timely arrival of [[Chet]], apparently the cytonic Spensa had spoken to. After Chet’s [[grig]] distracted the pirates, he led Spensa and M-Bot into the jungle, running away from the pirates.{{book ref|sky3|4}} Spensa and Chet introduced themselves, but a delver possessed the grig, and chased after them through the jungle. They escaped with M-Bot’s help, and Spensa learned more about Chet, who had been in the nowhere for a long time. Spensa tiene cerca de veinte años[5], con pelo castaño y mide 151 centímetros.[6][7] Su color favorito es el rojo sangre[8] y prefiere la comida sencilla pero sabrosa.[9]

Como hija del «Cobarde de Alta», Spensa era menosprecisada por sus compañeros Desafiantes. Por ello, actuaba con fiereza cuando se enfrentaba a otros y utilizaba la intimidación como mecanismo de defensa. Spensa solía arremeter contra los que la amenazaban e incluso contra los que no, utilizando un vocabulario amplio y algo gráfico inspirado en las historias de héroes gloriosos de la Tierra que le contaba su abuela. Estaba segura de que su padre no era un cobarde como todo el mundo pensaba, y se empeñaba en demostrarlo pareciendo lo más «valiente» posible. Sin embargo, ella creía que la valentía consistía en ser el guerrero más audaz y no mostrar nunca miedo. Pensaba que todo lo que no fuera eso la convertiría en una cobarde y demostraría que la FDD tenía razón sobre su padre.

Durante su estancia en la Escuela de vuelo, se dio cuenta de que ser valiente no era tan sencillo como ella pensaba. Atributos y habilidades

Spensa es una piloto excelente [14] y además tiene habilidades citónicas. Hasta ahora, ha demostrado la capacidad de interceptar las comunicaciones superlumínicas de los krell con sus drones y de reaccionar a esas órdenes más rápido de lo que sería humanamente posible.[15] En una ocasión, también fue capaz de activar el hipermotor cítono de M-Bot.[16]

Vivía en Gloriosas Cotas de la Industria con su madre y su abuela, Becca Nightshade, a quien llamaba yaya.[6] La madre de Becca era el "motor" de la Desafiante, permitiendo los viajes a velocidades superlumínicas.[12]

Spensa iba a la escuela y le iba razonablemente bien, pero de vez en cuando se saltaba las clases para ir a explorar o a cazar. El último día de clase se saltó las clases cuando un trabajador sanitario estaba dando una presentación. Por casualidad, encontró una vieja nave en una caverna, aparentemente de alta tecnología y aspecto desconocido. También encontró una babosa azul y amarilla a la que llamó Babosa Letal. Le dijeron que podía presentarse al examen de piloto y ella estaba segura de sus conocimientos. Horrorizada, se encontró con que el examen de piloto consistía en preguntas sobre la sanidad de la ciudad. Suspendió el examen, ya que había faltado a la clase de ese día.[17] Estuvo sentada en la sala de examen durante horas, luego cogió un examen normal en blanco y lo rellenó. Cuando acabó el día, Spensa robó la matriz de energía del aerodeslizador de Jorgen.[23]

Al día siguiente, Spensa conectó la matriz de energía a la nave y ésta se puso en marcha. Descubrió que la nave podía hablar, ya que albergaba una IA muy avanzada. Se presentó como M-Bot, una nave de sigilo de larga distancia. Sus bancos de datos se habían corrompido en su mayor parte, pero conocía sus últimas órdenes que consistían en pasar desapercibido y no meterse en ningún combate. La mayoría de sus sistemas estaban desconectados, y sólo unos pocos, como las comunicaciones, seguían funcionando. Como Spensa no podía arreglar a M-Bot por sí sola, reclutó a Gali para que la ayudara, quien aún estaba decidiendo qué quería hacer, ahora que no sería piloto.[24] A este, la nave le asombró y le motivó, por lo que decidió conseguir un trabajo en el Cuerpo de Ingenieros para poder ayudar a repararla.[25]

Cuando Spensa estaba en su cueva, los sensores del M-Bot detectaron la llegada de una gran fuerza krell, y Spensa se apresuró a regresar a Base Alta. Llegó tarde a la batalla y se unió al combate contra los krell. Marea murió en la batalla, y poco después Bim fue derribado también.[27] Spensa y los demás de Escuadrón Cielo seguían en estado de shock al día siguiente, y Cobb los presionó mucho en el entrenamiento para mantenerlos ocupados. Más tarde, Spensa encontró a Cobb viendo una repetición de la batalla y se enteró de que había sido él quien había derribado a su padre. Él le volvió a contar la historia de la cobardía de su padre, pero su actitud insinuaba que la historia oficial era falsa.[28]

Una vez que el Escuadrón Cielo fue competente con las lanzas de luz, Cobb les hizo pasar a aprender a utilizar el PMI. En el transcurso de su entrenamiento, M-Bot creó una comunicación privada con Spensa usando sus habilidades como nave de sigilo y reconocimiento, y permitiéndoles hablar en privado durante el transcurso de su entrenamiento. Las tensiones entre Jorgen y Spensa fueron en aumento, hasta que ella se enfureció tanto que le atacó, sorprendiendo a los demás cadetes. Spensa huyó rápidamente, temiendo su inminente expulsión en cuanto Jorgen informara a Férrea de sus acciones. Finalmente, acudió al despacho de la almirante para confesar, pero se encontró con que Jorgen no la había delatado. Él le dijo que no podían permitirse perder a otro piloto y le pidió perdón. Después de eso, la opinión de Spensa sobre Jorgen cambió, dándose cuenta de que siempre anteponía volar a sí mismo.[29]

Spensa participó en una gran escaramuza hacia un gran astillero en caída, que albergaba muchas grandes fuentes de piedra de pendiente. Durante la batalla, murieron dos de los hermanos de Nedd del Escuadrón Pesadilla.[30] Al día siguiente, después del entrenamiento de vuelo, Kimmalyn arrastró a Spensa a un pasillo y la llevó al dormitorio de las chicas, donde el resto de las chicas las esperaban con comida robada. Con su ayuda, Gali consiguió hacer funcionar algunas de las funciones básicas del M-Bot, y Spensa utilizó su lanza de luz para abrir el techo de la caverna. Hizo volar a M-Bot al aire libre, y se sorprendió de lo increíblemente sensible e increíble que era el vuelo, a pesar de que M-Bot no tenía propulsor.[31] En el entrenamiento, practicaron la defensa contra aniquiladoras, utilizando una grabación modificada de una batalla anterior. Spensa se dio cuenta de que la FDD debía tener la grabación de la verdadera Batalla de Alta escondida en algún lugar.[11] Una gran fuerza de Krell descendió a través de las plataformas, y el Escuadrón Cielo fue llamado a la batalla de nuevo. Durante la misma, el escudo de Arcada se vio superado y su nave sufrió graves daños. Descendió fuera de control y debía eyectarse siguiendo las instrucciones de Cobb. Sin embargo, se negó a ser una «cobarde», rehusando eyectarse y estrellándose. Después de la batalla, su escuadrón fue dado de baja obligatoria, y Kimmalyn abandonó la escuela de vuelo. Spensa averiguó dónde se había estrellado Arcada y decidió ir a darle un funeral de piloto como es debido. Jorgen se unió a ella, recuperando la insignia de piloto de Arcada y dándole un corto funeral. Spensa cogió el propulsor de la nave de Hurl, y Jorgen descubrió que está construyendo una nave estelar.[32]

Con el propulsor instalado, Gali por fin tenía a M-Bot listo para volar a pleno rendimiento, aunque algunas de sus características avanzadas seguían sin funcionar, como su hipermotor citónico. Spensa lo sacó a volar, asombrada por su increíble velocidad y su capacidad ConGrav. M-Bot proyectó una batalla holográfica en su parabrisas, proporcionando una simulación realista, y Spensa le hizo representar la Batalla de Alta. Se dio cuenta de que su padre casi parecía anticiparse a los movimientos de los krell, actuando justo antes que ellos. Oyó el canto de las estrellas y, de repente, la cabina se volvió negra y Spensa vio millones de ojos blancos como alfileres que la enfocaban. Gritó a M-Bot que la apagara, pero él dijo que no proyectaba lo que ella describía. M-Bot temía que Spensa le hiciera participar en la batalla en contra de las órdenes de su piloto original, por lo que se apagó para esperar a que regresara su piloto.[34]

Spensa visitó a su abuela, quien le contó que su familia había sido los motores de la nave Desafiante. Podían oír las estrellas e impulsar la nave hasta lugares lejanos. La yaya pensaba que la habilidad de Spensa era un don, no una maldición.[12] Cuando el Escuadrón Cielo estaba explorando, un gran trozo de valiosos escombros cayó junto con un gran enjambre de Krell. Se enfrentaron, y en el transcurso de la batalla Spensa fue derribada. Su nave empezó a hundirse y ella se eyectó con reticencia, desmayándose en el proceso. Se despertó en tierra y la almirante Férrea la expulsó de la escuela de vuelo por haberse eyectado. Esto dejó a su escuadrón con sólo dos miembros graduados, FM y Jorgen.[35] Spensa asistió a su ceremonia de graduación, llena de emociones contradictorias. Después fue a un restaurante con los demás miembros de su escuadrón, y escuchó por radio cómo un enorme contingente de krell, un centenar de ellos, atacaba Alta. Un bombardero sobrevoló, pero fue derribado. Los emplazamientos antiaéreos fueron dañados, y una fuerza de krell se dirigió hacia el punto débil. Spensa se dio cuenta de que aún quedaba una nave en la base de Alta que podía usar.[36]

La Segunda Batalla de Alta

Spensa obtuvo permiso del personal de tierra para utilizar la nave averiada de Arturo, cuyo sistema de escudos no funcionaba. Despegó de todos modos y anunció su llegada por el canal de control de vuelo. Localizó un segundo bombardero e intentó derribarlo. Estaba custodiado por ases y sus destructores estaban dañados. Planeó embestir al bombardero cuando se acercaba a la zona mortal, pero su anillo de pendiente falló y cayó en picado. Se estrelló, pero sobrevivió.[15] Cobb llegó volando en M-Bot, que había reescrito su programación para aceptar a Spensa como piloto. Montó en M-Bot y voló a por el bombardero. Tras un breve combate aéreo, escuchó una orden para hacer detonar la bomba en cien segundos. Hizo que Kimmalyn disparara a las abrazaderas del bombardero, soltando la aniquiladora.[37] Spensa la agarró con su lanza de luz y se alejó volando de Alta a toda velocidad, con la bomba remolcada tras ella. Justo cuando la cuenta atrás llegaba a su fin, M-Bot observó con sorpresa que el hipermotor ctónico estaba en línea. Spensa activó sus habilidades citónicas, teletransportándola a ella y a M-Bot fuera de la explosión.[16]

Spensa entró en el lugar de los ojos, y éstos se centraron en ella. Volvió sobresaltada a la cabina de M-Bot, que le informó de que el hipermotor citónico había vuelto a desconectarse. Descubrió que estaba a cien kilómetros del lugar de la explosión y que no había pasado casi nada de tiempo. Spensa llamó a la Base Alta y oyó vítores. Férrea le dijo que regresara a la base y que indultaría a Perseguidor, pero Spensa vio un agujero en el cinturón de escombros.[38] Voló a través de él, donde descubrió que el cinturón era una serie de plataformas de defensa organizadas. Vio una gran estación espacial más allá de ellas y pudo oír las comunicaciones krell. Intentaron sobrescribir su visión como hicieron con su padre, pero M-Bot bloqueó la señal y la mantuvo a salvo. M-Bot tradujo algunas comunicaciones y descargó algunos de sus datos. Descubrió que los krell eran en verdad sus guardias de prisión, manteniendo a los humanos contenidos en Detritus.[39]

Planificando

Durante los siguientes seis meses, Detritus progresó mucho, y también lo hizo la habilidad de Spensa. Se volvió experta en escuchar las comunicaciones krell y moverse antes que ellos, y como resultado los krell empezaron a enviar ases en cazas tripulados para matarla.[40] En medio de un combate aéreo, llegaron dos acorazados de la Supremacía, y el mando informó a Spensa de que eran capaces de bombardear el planeta.[41] Tras regresar a la Plataforma Primaria, le informaron de que el equipo de ingenieros había descubierto una antigua grabación de la plataforma. Después de que Spensa, Cobb y algunos otros llegaran, reprodujeron la grabación. Esta mostraba una sala de mando en la que una mujer, presa del pánico, decía que sus defensas habían fallado y que había llegado un zapador. El zapador los envolvió, y la pantalla se volvió negra, pero Spensa vio una imagen de sí misma mirándola fijamente en la pantalla, que nadie más en la sala vio.[1][42]

Tras ver la grabación, Cobb apartó a Spensa y le dijo que necesitaban encontrar una forma de salir de Detritus, como averiguar el secreto de los hipermotores de la Supremacía. Sugirió que Spensa y un equipo podrían infiltrarse hipotéticamente en la estación espacial de la Supremacía, pero no sabía muy bien cómo hacerlo. Spensa sintió una extraña sensación cuando una nave solitaria apareció en el exterior de Detritus y comenzó a abrirse paso a través de las plataformas.[44] Spensa y Kimmalyn salieron en sus cazas para echar un vistazo a la nave, que encontraron precipitándose hacia el suelo, fuera de control. Ralentizaron el descenso de la nave con sus lanzas de luz y lograron que se estrellara de forma casi controlada. En su interior encontraron a una alienígena humanoide de piel rosada. [45]

Estaba gravemente herida, pero utilizó un alfiler traductor para hablar con Spensa antes de desmayarse. Le dijo que no confiara en la Supremacía y le implantó citónicamente las coordenadas de Visión Estelar en la mente. M-Bot pirateó los registros de la alienígena Alanik y descubrió que se dirigía allí para unirse a su flota estelar. Spensa se dio cuenta de que era la oportunidad perfecta para ir a Visión Estelar en lugar de Alanik, utilizando la tecnología holográfica de M-Bot para disfrazarse de la alienígena. Las coordenadas empezaron a desvanecerse de su mente, y tuvo que tomar una decisión precipitada. Comentó la idea con Jorgen, que le dijo que debía ir. Se subió a M-Bot y utilizó las coordenadas para saltar a las afueras de Visión Estelar.[43]

Spensa llegó a Visión Estelar, que está a unos 40.000 años luz de Detritus. Ella y M-Bot consiguieron entrar en la estación espacial, ya que su disfraz y la información falsa de M-Bot se mantenían.[2] Una vez allí, fue recibida por le ministre Cuna, que le enseñó dónde se alojaba y le explicó el funcionamiento de la estación.[46] Acudió a las pruebas para piloto de caza de la Supremacía, en las que se utilizaban naves teledirigidas con fuego real. Los pilotos tenían que sobrevivir durante treinta minutos. Spensa vio una gran nave tambaleándose, y la rescató con la ayuda de Morriumur y Vapor. Las cuatro naves trabajaron juntas durante el ejercicio y lo superaron, y después las juntaron en un escuadrón, incluyendo a Brade.[47] Spensa conoció a la señora Chamwit, su ama de llaves. Spensa desconfiaba mucho de ella, creyendo que era una espía de la Supremacía pesar de su carácter amable. También habló mucho con Cuna, aprendiendo sobre Visión Estelar y su política.[48] Spensa y su escuadrón abordaron su nave de transporte, la Pesos y Medidas, que los hipersaltó hasta su lugar de entrenamiento. Mientras saltaban, Spensa oyó un grito agudo que nadie más parecía haber oído.[49]

“Pero ¿qué creéis que estáis haciendo, idiotas? ¡Eso ha sido la imitación más vergonzosa de una aproximación hostil que he visto en la vida! ¡Brade, tenías órdenes de despejar la línea de tiro, no de traernos un puñado de pelos de la nariz del enemigo!”

Entrenaron en un laberinto de zapador, pero estaban completamente desorganizados. Vapor reconoció la experiencia de vuelo de Spensa y la nombró segunda al mando para que dirigiera al grupo en los ejercicios. Se encontró a sí misma en el papel con facilidad, copiando inconscientemente los gestos de Cobb.[50] Después de aprender los fundamentos de la lucha contra los zapadores en el laberinto, Spensa trabajó en el montaje de un dron en la embajada, con la ayuda de M-Bot. Aprendió más sobre la Supremacía y sobre los taynix.[51] Después de que M-Bot lo programara, Spensa liberó el dron en la Pesos y Medidas. Tras practicar con su escuadrón, su dron fue descubierto, y Spensa se vio obligada a esconderlo tras el caos posterior. Spensa fue descubierta por Vapor y Cuna, que supusieron que era una espía genérica de UrDail. Spensa vio el vídeo del dron de la sala de máquinas, tomado antes de que hicieran el hipersalto, y vio que estaban usando taynix para hacer el hipersalto.[52] Cuna revela los planes de Winzik, que consisten en utilizar zapadores para controlar planetas rebeldes, entre los que probablemente se encuentre Detritus. Spensa le cuenta la verdad a Cuna, que se asombra en lugar de enfadarse. Después de que el escuadrón es llamado a la acción, Spensa decide revelarse a Brade, que inmediatamente hace sonar la alarma, anunciando que ha encontrado a la espía humana.[53] Spensa se vio obligada a escapar en su caza estelar de la Supremacía, hipersaltando de vuelta a Detritus pero dejando atrás a M-Bot en Visión Estelar, que intentaba reescribir su programación. Tras ir a la Plataforma Primaria e informar a Cobb, oyó a Brade gritar en la ninguna-parte. Spensa se dio cuenta de que Winzik estaba intentando invocar a un zapador para atacar Detritus, y se apresuró hacia su caza estelar.[54]

“¿Por qué deberías creerlos a ellos? —pregunté—. Sabes que no soy el monstruo que dicen que soy. Has volado conmigo. Nuestros pueblos fueron aliados hace mucho tiempo. Sabes que a la Supremacía no le importa tu especie. Ven conmigo. Ayúdame. ”

Hesho estaba enfadado por la traición de Spensa y quería derribarla, pero su tripulación no le hizo caso y se unió a Spensa. Spensa le dijo a Cobb que apagara todas las comunicaciones de la Plataforma Primaria, y ella, Vapor y la nave de Hesho persiguieron a Brade. Consiguieron inutilizar la nave de Brade, pero no antes de que ésta consiguiera invocar al zapador, que emergió en el sistema. Spensa, en un momento de desesperación, lo recondujo, consiguiendo que fuera a destruir Estelar en lugar de Detritus.[56] La nave de Hesho había sufrido daños en su combate aéreo con Brade, y Kauri informó a Spensa de que Hesho había muerto. Spensa hipersaltó junto con Vapor y Kauri de vuelta a Estelar, aunque la nave de Kauri había sufrido demasiados daños como para poder luchar. Spensa y Vapor entraron en el laberinto del zapador, persiguiendo a Brade y esquivando las ascuas que les disparaba. Spensa y Vapor se separaron, pero Spensa fue rescatada con la llegada de Morriumur, cuya naturaleza dual le permitía combatir las alucinaciones que proyectaba el zapador. Morriumur llevó a Spensa a un lugar seguro, dejándola sola en el corazón del zapador.[50]

En una habitación totalmente blanca, Spensa pudo comunicarse con la criatura, que adoptó su propia forma ante ella. Fue consciente del punto de vista del zapador, que veía a los humanos de Estelar como ruidos molestos. Spensa le mostró su propio punto de vista, el cómo los humanos cuidaban de sus hijos y tenían amigos y familias. Él se horrorizó ante la revelación, pues no se había dado cuenta de que los ruidos estaban vivos. Rápidamente desapareció, volviendo a la nada y dejando a Spensa flotando en el espacio.[57]

Tras ser rescatada y tratada en un hospital de la Supremacía en Estelar, fue recibida por Cuna, que había empezado a hacer propuestas de paz con los humanos.[58] Los soldados de Winzik vinieron a elles sin previo aviso, Spensa ayudó a Cuna a escapar, escondiendole en un armario. Spensa se encontró con Brade, que la salvó de un avión de Supremacía y le pidió que se uniera al golpe de Winzik. Spensa decidió huir, encontrando a M-Bot, que había sido completamente destruido por los científicos de la Supremacía; pero descubrió que había conseguido cambiar lentamente su programación, copiándose a sí mismo en el cuerpo de un dron de limpieza. Con más soldados en camino, Spensa condujo a M-Bot y a Babosa Letal hacia la ubicación del portal de la ninguna-parte de Estelar, que ella había visto antes. Lo tocó, arrastrándose a sí misma y a ellos hacia la ninguna-parte.[59]

Tras aparecer en la ninguna-parte, Sepensa percibiño al zapador que cambió en Estelar y pudo sentir su miedo. Se puso en contacto con él y este le dice que puede aprender más sobre sus poderes en ese lugar. Puso una ubicación en su mente, contándole que recorriera la Senda de los Ancianos. Spensa pide a Babosa Letal que se fuera a casa, y luego saltó hasta el lugar de su mente.[4]

El lugar donde aparecieron tras cruzar el portal era una selva. M-Bot estaba enfadado con Spensa por abandonarle en Estelar y salió volando hacia la selva. A solas, Spensa revisó sus provisiones y oyó una voz citónica que le hablaba. De repente, fue atacada por un grupo de piratas, que la derrotaron y se llevaron la insignia de piloto de su padre, que había aparecido misteriosamente en el bolsillo de la chaqueta de vuelo de Spensa. Spensa fue atada y finalmente rescatada por M-Bot. A su vez, fueron rescatados por la oportuna llegada de Chet, al parecer el citónico con el que Spensa había hablado. Después de que el grig de Chet distrajera a los piratas, condujo a Spensa y a M-Bot por la jungla, huyendo de los piratas.{{book ref|sky3|4} Spensa y Chet se presentaron, pero un zapador poseyó al grig, y empezó a perseguirles. Pudieron escapar con la ayuda de M-Bot y Spensa conoció más de Chet, que había estado en la ninguna-parte durante mucho tiempo. Se ofreció a ser su guía por ese lugar, ayudándola a recorrer la Senda de los Ancianos, a cambio de una ceniza de realidad diaria. En ese momento, tanto Spensa como M-Bot se dieron cuento de que Chet debía de ser el piloto de M-Bot, ya que la sincronización era perfecta.[61] Chet les mostró el parche de su uniforme con el nombre SPEARS, el nombre del antiguo piloto de M-Bot; aunque Spensa tenía más dudas que M-Bot.

Durante su estancia en la ninguna-parte, Spensa se comunicaba ocasionalmente con Jorgen mientras dormía, y aprovechaban el tiempo para hablar y ponerse al día de los acontecimientos. Spensa también pudo escuchar las conversaciones que Winzik y Brade mantenían con los zapadores, que intentaban llegar a un acuerdo con ellos.[62]

Chet y Spensa discutieron sus habilidades citónicas, Chet dijo que tiene la capacidad de comunicarse citónicamente, extender su vida útil, y visualizar todo el cinturón en su cabeza. Viajaron a través de muchos fragmentos, decidiendo que podrían robar un caza estelar en la base de los Costaderos, y atravesar la Senda de los Ancianos más rápido.[63] Spensa quedó muy impresionada con Chet mientras avanzaban, en varios sentidos. Se enfrentaron a dificultades a medida que viajaban a través de los diversos fragmentos del Cinturón, con los zapadores tratando de matarlos[64] Alcanzaron el primer escalón de la Senda de los Ancianos, que contenía recuerdos de una dione citónica que llegó a la nada y murió en el fragmento, atrapada para siempre.[65]

Se dirigieron al fragmento de la base pirata, observando la misma desde lejos. Chet aconsejó a Spensa que enterrara a su icono de realidad,[66] pero Spensa fingió enterrarlo, manteniéndolo consigo.[67]

Spensa slipped into the base, but was captured along with M-Bot, who pretended to be a simple cleaning drone. The group of Broadsiders, members of Cutlass Flight, treated Spensa fairly well, keeping her busy. Spensa got to know the various members of the crew as she did so, meanwhile having cytonic conversations with Chet, who had been wounded making a distraction. Spensa got permission for M-Bot to help her clean different things for the pirates, and eventually got M-Bot in position to upload himself into one of the pirate starfighters. He took control of it just in time, saving Spensa as she was attacked by Peg, who attacked her since she knew Spensa to be a true killer.[69] M-Bot tried flying as they escaped, but didn’t do very well. Spensa tried to go back for her father’s pin, but found it missing. Spensa returned to the Broadsiders with Chet after certain terms were made, and Spensa was allowed to upload M-Bot to the Broadsiders’ best ship.[70]

As part of their agreement, Spensa and Chet got to visit the next portal, learning about early cytonics and discovering that the next portal is in Surehold, the Superiority’s main base in the nowhere. Afterward, Spensa fought in a battle for the title of Pirate Champion, Peg insisting a victory would unite the factions. The enemy champion proved to be Hesho, who had survived by being sucked into space by being transported to the nowhere. He had lost all his memories, however. Spensa beat him, then discovered that Peg had been conspiring with her sons, who led other factions, to unite the pirates in an attack on Surehold.[72]

Soon after, five of the pirate factions flew towards Surehold, and engaged with the Superiority’s pilots and the Cannonade Faction, which Hesho was a part of. Spensa engaged with Hesho again, who became possessed by a delver. Spensa managed to defeat him through trickery, using old training instincts he still unconsciously still obeyed. During the battle, a delver on the other side was devouring a planet, causing chunks of matter from the somewhere to appear out of thin air.[73] Hesho joined Spensa after his defeat, and the Cannonade Faction left the battle after a temporary truce was called. Peg talked with Lorn, the base commander of Surehold, whose family was being held captive by the Superiority. Peg devised a plan to get Lorn’s family back, and Lorn allowed them to take over the base.[74]

Spensa could sense her father’s pin talking with her, and knew it was at Surehold. The delvers communicated with her, offering her a truce if she didn’t finish the Path of Elders and didn’t return to the somewhere.[75] She found her father’s pin the next day, and discovered that it is actually Doomslug, hiding herself so that the delvers can’t see her. After her reunion with Doomslug, Spensa talked with Peg, who gave her a fruit from her tenasi tree, a great honor.[76] Spensa and Chet both went to the second to last portal, and saw Jason Write with his AI. Chet said softly that it sometimes takes years for an AI to start thinking for itself. Spensa got a good look at the floating sphere, and it reminded her of the delver maze. Chet whispered that when AI are forced to build a body again, they unconsciously reach for something familiar. Spensa realized that Chet is a delver, the one that she changed during his attack on Starsight. After Chet explained his story, Spensa tried to comprehend all the information, but comes to the correct conclusion that Delvers are highly evolved AI. Chet said that the last portal is on Solitary Shadow, a fragment very close to the lightburst. Spensa bade farewell to Cutlass Flight, and was joined by Doomslug, Hesho, and Chet as she flew off towards Solitary Shadow.[77]

Solitary Shadow and the Lightburst

“But it wasn’t merely about duty. It was about stories. After it all, I…didn’t want to live in a story. Not if it meant leaving my friends and family. I wouldn’t ever be happy in here without them, and I didn’t want to forget them like Chet had. ”

After making a rough plan with the team, Spensa, Chet, and Doomslug touched down on on Solitary Shadow, and accessed the final portal in the Path of Elders. They learn that the first delver was an AI Jason created, modeling it after the personality of his dead wife. The AI became self aware, and copied itself after changing its programming. The delvers were furious at Spensa for learning their secrets, and had rejected their treaty. Spensa and the others got back inside M-Bot, and took off full speed towards the lightburst, where they could escape the nowhere.[78] As she approached the lightburst, many of the delvers formed bodies, creating roughly a hundred ships to fight Spensa. For each one she destroyed, a new one took its place. The ships didn’t obey normal laws of physics, making them difficult to kill. Using her cytonic senses, Spensa was able to sense where the delvers were about to move, allowing her to evade attacks. There became too many however, and Chet sacrificed himself to distract them by leaving the ship. As ten thousand more ships emerged from the lightburst, Spensa landed M-Bot on the ground near the lightburst, Doomslug hiding them. M-Bot distracted Spensa, getting her and the others to leave his cockpit, then locking the doors. After saying farewell to Spensa, he sacrificed himself, letting the delvers destroy him and think they’d killed Spensa. The delvers flew away, allowing Spensa, Doomslug, and Hesho to enter the lightburst.[78]

Spensa entered the lightburst, and the delvers were surprised to find her alive. The delvers wereare furious at Spensa, angry that she knew their secrets. Spensa felt tired beneath the onslaught of hateful delvers. Amidst all of the hate, she felt one delver that was different, which emanated courage. Spensa latched onto Chet, and they connected, their essences intertwining. Their minds and souls joined together, becoming one. The delvers tied to destroy Spensa and Chet, but touching her hurt them. A location clicked into Spensa’s mind, and she hyperjumped back to Detritus, holding Hesho and Doomslug.[79] Spensa emerged in the caverns of Detritus, then hyperjumped to Platform Prime, appearing before Jorgen and several DDF officials. They were alarmed, as her eyes were glowing white like a delver’s. After fainting, she woke up and talked with Jorgen, and had a happy reuinion. Spensa told Jorgen she knew the secrets of the delvers, and also saw that Detritus was orbiting another planet.[80]

Relationships

Jorgen Weight

Jorgen is Spensa's boyfriend.[81] They originally got off on a bad foot, due to Jorgen being admitted into flight school without completing the admission test and his ordering around of Skyward Flight prior to being made flightleader.[17][3] As a result, she nicknames him "Jerkface", which later becomes his callsign, much to his chagrin. [19] Jorgen also outs Spensa as being the daughter of Zeen Nightshade, The Coward of Alta, after Spensa bests him during flight practice.[23] In retaliation, she steals his car's power matrix.[23] The animosity in their relationship reaches a peak when they get into a fight which ends in Spensa physically attacking Jorgen.[82] Spensa expects Jorgen to report her, but instead he tells her that he needs every pilot on the flight, even her.[29] After Hurl's death, Jorgen helps Spensa give her a pilot's burial and they discuss how the both of them live in their parent's shadows. Jorgen also allows Spensa to steal parts from Hurl's ship and encourages her to build her own ship so that she can fly and be Defiant.[83][32] Later on, they talk about the deaths of their flightmates and hug.[84]. Spensa also confides in Jorgen about her and her father's "defect", and he calls her amazing and reassures her that he still wants her on his flight.[34] Both of them, along with the rest of the Skyward Flight fly together in the Battle of Alta Second.[37]

Jorgen later tells Spensa off for her recklessness and helps her vocalize her thoughts and why she pushed herself so hard.[85] Spensa then notes that his being an embodiment of the order, unlike her, made it difficult for them to begin a romantic relationship.[85]. After Alanik crash lands on Detritus, Spensa discusses infiltrating Starsight with Jorgen. He helps by walking her through the practical aspects of her plan and encouraging her to go, telling her he trusts her, after which they kiss.[43]

Multiple times while stuck in the nowhere, Spensa contacts Jorgen using her powers. Each time they exchange heartfelt words or gestures to one another, expressing their deep feeling for each other. Jorgen officially calls Spensa his girlfriend the first time they make contact, after which Spensa offers to give him a dead orc carcass in a show of her gratitude. [86] They kiss again once reunited after Spensa wakes up from fainting into Jorgen's arms. [87]

The Corrupted Delver

When the Superiority brings a delver into the physical realm to attack Detritus, Spensa ultimately defeats it by teaching it empathy.[59] Renouncing its former hatred, the delver creates a mortal form for itself in order to help and guide Spensa through Cytonic training in the Nowhere, choosing the name Chet Starfinder.[89][77] The delvers' hatred of Spensa is especially great because, as they see it, she corrupted one of them.[79]

Through their friendship, Chet experiences trust, betrayal,[90] and courage.[91][79] At one point, he asks her to run away with him and be Nowhere explorers forever, and she is tempted.[74]

In a sense, Spensa is Chet's creator,[77] as well as his student,[74] his employer,[89] and his friend.[91] In the end, they appear to become one mind,[87] with Spensa apparently still in control but with access to his knowledge.

Trivia

  • Spensa's race was intentionally left ambiguous.[92]
  • The first ideas for her character were developed in 2012.[93]
  • If she was a Knight Radiant, she would most likely be a Dustbringer, "with small arguments for Stoneward, Skybreaker, or Edgedancer."[94]
