She was King Gavilar Kholin's widow and the mother of Elhokar and Jasnah.

She was a renowned engineer, scholar and artifabrian and was heavily involved in the creation of new fabrials. She was one of the artifabrians who created the Grandbow as well as a type of painrial.

When she returned to the Shattered Plains, she frequently spoke with Dalinar Kholin, and later became romantically involved with him.

Navani also discovered that the language which Dalinar spoke during his visions was actually the Dawnchant, a formerly lost language, and so proved that his visions were accurate and not the product of insanity.

History

Return to the Shattered Plains

In the evening after Navani returned to the Shattered Plains, she attended a feast thrown by Elhokar where the King's Wit tried rather unsuccessfully to mock her. She quickly gathered a group of lighteyed women around her, presumably for political gain, and introduced them to a new fabrial called painrial. After a while, she joined Dalinar and Adolin, and warmly greeted them. Dalinar was awkward to see her and asked why she'd returned to the Shattered Plains. Adolin left to find Renarin and inform him of Navani's arrival, leaving her and Dalinar. Navani sat down, not at the king's table which would be against protocol, but a few feet away from it while still keeping in talking distance from Dalinar. She told him that the Vedens had perfected their half-shard fabrials. They both agreed that the warcamps were becoming the true center of Alethkar and that it was dangerous for the nation. After discussing Elhokar a bit, Navani suggested that he wasn't a very good king. Dalinar was shocked and strongly disagreed with it. She told him that they needed to speak in private and they rendezvoused for a week later. Right after this, Elhokar announced Sadeas's appointment as the Highprince of Information, supplying evidence for Navani's assessment of him.

A week later, Dalinar forgot about and missed their appointment. Navani found him working on the latrines and gently chastised him. She told him that the spanreed fabrial that was bound to Jasnah was flashing. Dalinar couldn't deny her to come along with him after giving her offense, so the two went to

• Navani's notebook, shown in two of the illustrations within the book, is the only sample we have of Alethi writing.
