When citylord Brightlord [[Wistiow]] died, Lirin received a lot of diamond broams that he should use for Kaladin's education.{{book ref|twok|16}} Later there were rumors that Lirin stole the spheres. Eventually some of the townsmen tried to take the spheres but Lirin persuaded them to leave.{{book ref|twok|31}} The new citylord, [[Roshone]], worked against Lirin from day one. Though he had no legal possibility to get the spheres, his comments caused the townspeople to stop giving donations and overcharge for their own goods, which made Lirin's family destitute.{{book ref|twok|37}} In order to deceive [[Roshone]] into thinking his family was worse off than they were, Lirin occasionally spent the spheres. Eventually [[Brightlord]] [[Amaram]] came to town for recruiting new soldiers. Lirin thought that they were safe because they are of the second nahn and his and Kaladin's work as surgeons is vital. But Roshone, who could decide who has to join the army, sent Tien away, as he was not vital to the city. When Kaladin decided to follow Tien in order to protect him, Lirin and Hesina cried, defenselessly, as they lost both sons on this day.{{book ref|twok|44}}
 
After the death of [[Tien]] four months after being drafted, [[Kaladin]] has a message sent back to his parents informing them that he failed to keep him safe and that he would not be returning home after his four years of enlistment ended as he could not face them.He does not receive a reply from them.{{book ref|sa1|47}}
