--::I'm sorry, this is fairly common in fantasy. Realize we are all reading the books in translation, rather than the native Selish tongue. You're welcome to disagree, but professional editors of novels would disagree with your assessment. If you look at the definition of the word "earth", this is valid. To add to that, by your logic, any magic with classical elements can't use the word "earth," or have spells named "earthquake." This is extremely, extremely common to use the word in this way.
