Kaladin spent eight months under various slavemasters, until he was eventually sold to Sadeas' warcamp to work as a bridgeman in the Shattered Plains. He became the leader of Bridge Four, whom he trained as spearmen in an effort to escape from slavery. Before their work could come into fruition, the Bridge Four saved the lives of Dalinar Kholin and a sizable part of his army, after Kholin was betrayed by Sadeas to the Parshendi. In gratitude, Kholin freed them and offered them to become his bodyguards. Kaladin was given the rank of captain—a first for a darkeyes. During his time as bodyguard, Kaladin fought the Assassin in White, and saved King Elhokar from other assassins. He engaged the Assassin in White for the second time in the Battle of Narak, and, this time, defeated him, saving Dalinar Kholin again. After Urithiru was discovered, he became one of the four founding members of the post-Recreance-era Knights Radiant.
Tien dies in battle shortly after. Driven to despair by Tien's death, Kaladin throws himself into becoming a strong soldier that can protect others. He is soon renowned as the best spearman in the army, earning him the title Stormblessed. In 1172, Kaladin kills an enemy Shardbearer in battle while defending Highmarshal Amaram. Kaladin thus earns the right to claim the Shards for himself, however, Amaram betrays him and takes the Shards for himself. Amaram murders all of the men under Kaladin's command but brands Kaladin as a slave in a gesture of gratitude for saving his life.

Kaladin is eventually sold to Sadeas warcamp where he is assigned to Bridge Four to work as a bridgeman. As a bridgeman, his life is expendable and he is expected to be bait so that Sadeas's regular forces will suffer less casualties. Once again losing hope, he is convinced by the honorspren Sylphrena, more commonly known as Syl, to protect the bridgemen. During the Battle of the Tower, instead of using the chaos of battle to escape captivity, he and Bridge Four saves the lives of Dalinar Kholin and his men. In return, Dalinar negotiates the bridgemen's freedom from Sadeas in exchange for his Shardblade, a priceless artifact worth more than some kingdoms.

In an unprecedented move, Dalinar gives Kaladin, a darkeyes, command of the thousand former bridgemen and raises him to the rank of captain. Bridge Four, now seen as elite troops, is named the personal guard for the Kholin family replacing the Cobalt Guard. Kaladin was also charged with turning his thousand former bridgemen into a full battalion of troops for Dalinar's army. Kaladin slowly does this by building a supporting hierarchy of lesser officers underneath himself and slowly gaining the trust of the other crews, while also acclimating the former bridgemen to military life by having them patrol the camps.

In his role as Dalinar's head bodyguard, Kaladin also becomes intimately acquainted with Dalinar's sons, Adolin and Renarin, and comes into close contact with many of the Alethi lighteyed nobility. In particular, he learns that Dalinar is old friends with Amaram. This, in addition to his subordinate Moash's insistence that King Elhokar is incompetent and must be assassinated, drives Kaladin into a lust for revenge and a path of dishonor that eventually "kills" Syl. However, Kaladin redeems himself when he resolves to protect King Elhokar and manages to revive Syl, advancing his powers as a Surgebinder and Knight Radiant in the process.
