They are the only known objects able to block a [[Shardblade]] apart from [[Shardplate]] and other shardblades. Despite not granting any of the other benefits of shardplate, such as enhanced strength and agility, they represent a significant breakthrough in fabrial science. Their bulky size and shape often leads to their users being hampered in ways shardbearers are not.{{ref|b|sa1|i|9}} While inspired by shardplate, half-shards work according to a different design principle.{{ref|b|sa1|c|60}}
They were capable of stopping blows from [[Shardblade]]s. They were diamond shaped shields made of metal with an altering fabrial on the back which enhanced the durability of the metal, many different gemstones in the fabrial have been observed and it is thought that any of the ten polestones will work.{{ref|b|WoK|Ars}}
 
They were created in imitation of [[shardplate]] and are the only objects other than plate known to be able to stop a Shardblade. They gave none of the other benefits of Shardplate and were quite bulky, hindering their users much more than Plate.
Their design consists of a diamond-shaped metal plate with an infused gem attached to its back increase its durability.{{ref|b|sa1|i|9}} It is believed any of the ten [[Polestone]]s may be used.{{ref|b|sa1|ars}}
