Los mandras abandonan el cuerpo del abismoide en las horas inmediatamente posteriores a su muerte. Su aspecto es algo distinto al que tienen normalmente cuando regresan a [[Shadesmar]], siendo a menudo confundidos con lenguas de humo.{{book ref|sa1|15}}

Una vez allí, establecen un nido y continúan cazando y rebuscando en los abismos.{{book ref|sa1|12}} Finalmente, impulsados por algún instinto desconocido, suben a una de las mesetas y pupan, formando una '''crisálida''' inmóvil de color roca a su alrededor. Esta pupación suele producirse durante la noche, con la crisálida ya formada al llegar el día. A partir de entonces, la crisálida espera una [[alta tormenta]]; lo que ocurre anatómicamente una vez que ésta se produce no está claro, ya que es entonces cuando se suelen recolectar.{{book ref|sa2|49}} No obstante, se sabe que absorben mucha Investidura al exponerse a la alta tormenta, lo cual probablemente sea la razón de que escojan esa localización para pupar.{{wob ref|3304}}
