The origin of the Bondsmiths is less clear than other orders. While the term is generally used to refer to the order of Knights Radiant, the term Bondsmith predates the order, seemingly though still referring to a person with a similar powerset.{{book ref|sa4|i|1}} An ancient Bondsmith bound Surges and brought the human refugees from Ashyn to Roshar. The Bondsmith Ishar served as founder of the Oathpact, and a Bondsmith discovered or created the Nahel bond. These all may have been Ishar, although it is uncertain what granted him the powers of a Bondsmith prior to becoming a Herald.
