The First Contract came into existence after it was discovered that powerful soothers could take over the body of kandra and force them to do their will.<ref>{{brefref|b|mb3|Cc|5}}</ref> It was believed that if the kandra had a set of laws swearing them into the service of humans who held their contract that there would be no need to try controlling the kandra in any other way.
