The novels of ''The Stormlight Archive'' follow a consistent internal structure. Each is split into five parts, and Brandon plots each novel as if it were an entire trilogy. The names of each part, when put together, form a [[ketek]]. Between each part is a set of interludes, set in different points of view, which show events in other locations on Roshar. Each novel has one character who gets multiple interludes, whose interludes effectively form a novella. The books also feature several pieces of in-world art on the endpages and between some chapters end epigraphs from in-world documents at the start of each non-flashback chapter.{{wob ref|3718}}{{wob ref|3916}} Each of the first five books begins with a prologue that shows a different character's perspective of the night of the [[assassination of Gavilar]] and ends with an epilogue from [[Hoid]]'s point of view.{{wob ref|13282}}{{wob ref|12260}} Each book also includes an [[Ars Arcanum]].
Each book will focus on one specific [[Knights Radiant|Order of Knights Radiant]] and one primary viewpoint character: [[Order of Windrunners|Windrunner]] (Kaladin) for ''The Way of Kings'', [[Order of Lightweavers|Lightweaver]] (Shallan) for ''Words of Radiance'', and [[Order of Bondsmiths|Bondsmith]] (Dalinar) for ''Oathbringer''. Venli will be the primary viewpoint character for ''Rhythm of War''. The fifth book will focus on the [[Order of Skybreakers]] and Szeth.

The third entry, [[Oathbringer]], was released on November 14, 2017. The Stormlight Archive novella [[Edgedancer (novella)|Edgedancer]] was released in 2016. Chronologically it takes place after ''Words of Radiance'', showing some events that couldn't have been shown by any of the normal viewpoint characters in the other books.
