During the [[Siege of Kholinar]], Vivenna (now going by the name of Azure) met both Kaladin and Adolin. Before parting from them, she asked them to warn Zahel that she was looking for him.{{book ref|sa3|110}}
After Kaladin was asked to retire from the front lines, he asked Zahel if he could become a swordsmaster with the Ardents. Zahel challenged him to a fight to test his skills, using Awakened cloths to assist him, while grilling Kaladin about his motivations to fight and his religious beliefs. Kaladin recognizes his fighting style as being the same as Azure's and tells Zahel that she's looking for him; Zahel is unconcerned because she'll have to get through [[Cultivation]]'s [[perpendicularity]] first. Zahel doesn't let Kaladin join the Ardents because he realizes that Kaladin still loves the fight. He then gives Kaladin a fossil and explains that he is a [[Cognitive Shadow]] like the [[Heralds]] and the [[Fused]], and that the only way to kill the Fused is with a weapon that can unravel their souls. {{book ref|sa4|15}}
