This Oathgate was used to ferry people from the warcamps on the [[Shattered Plains]] to Urithiru. The Oathgates became central to Dalinar Kholin's plan to unite Roshar against the Voidbringers, intending to begin his defense by protecting the cities with Oathgates. After reaching out via spanreed, many kingdoms were hesitant to open portals to their capitals to the warlike Alethi, but Taravangian of Jah Keved was the first to agree,{{book ref|sa3|12}} ordering his Radiant [[Malata]] to activate the Oathgate.{{book ref|sa3|24}} The Thaylens were the firstnext to agree to allow Dalinar to open their Oathgate, Kaladin and Shallan flew with a highstorm to Thaylen City to open the way. With the start of the [[True Desolation]], [[Odium]] managed to compel the [[Unmade]] [[Sja-anat]] to corrupt the Oathgate spren in [[Kholinar]]. When King Elhokar's party attempted to activate the Oathgate to bring in an Alethi army to retake the city, they were instead transported to [[Shadesmar]]. They traveled through the Cognitive Realm to the Oathgate in [[Thaylen City]], but were ultimately unsuccessful at convincing the guardian spren to allow them to transit. During the [[Battle of Thaylen Field]], Voidbringers attacked Urithiru via the Kholinar Oathgate, while simultaneously siezing control of the Thaylen City Gate. After Teft lead the Althi to defeat the Voidbringers in Urithiru, he brought Althi reinforcements through the gate to Thaylen City to turn the tide of the battle.

When the Gates once were active, they were seen as a symbol of the [[Vorinism|Vorin]] [[Right of Travel]], a reflection of a declaration by the [[Herald]]s that all borders should be open.{{book ref|sa2|83}} The Oathgates were viewed as a source of pride and therefore they were constructed in full view in each capital city.

Stories and folklore
 
Once the Oathgates were closed, they became the subject of myths and legends. Tales such as those collected in [[Among the Darkeyed]] are filled with mentions of traveling instantaneously and Oathgates.{{book ref|sa1|39}} It is said that only one of the Knights Radiant are capable of opening the pathway,{{book ref|sa2|75}} in fact it is seen as their duty.{{book ref|sa2|77}} In Thaylenah, stories speak of the one most [[Passions|Passionate]] who could open the portal of worlds again.{{book ref|sa3sa1|12}} Children dream of being the person who discovers how to open the Oathgates again.
