Ten years after the [[Reod]], Raoden underwent the Shaod transformation into an [[Elantrian]], a transformation that was, at the time, incomplete.{{book ref|Elantris|1}} HisHe father, King Iadon,was immediately exilescast hisinto sonthe androtting hecity isof leftElantris, toas fendwas for himself in the rotting citytradition. There, he meetsmet thea Duladel[[Dula]] named [[Galladon]] and discoverslearned that he existshad in a statebecome like a corpse, with no heartbeat and theno inabilityability to heal his wounds. Galladon informstold him of Elantris and the fate that liesawaited formodern Elantrians. He eventually showsshowed Raoden that heElantrians canretained the ability to draw Aons[[Aon]]s, but isthat unablethe tocharacters connectwere unable to access the [[Dor]], making the glowing lines useless to the Elantrians. This leadsled to Raoden's investigation of the connection between the failure of AonDor and the Reod.

As an Elantrian, heRaoden worked to bring peace and civilization to the people living in Elantris, who had devolved into a primitive, bestial society.{{book ref|Elantris|16}}{{book ref|Elantris|41}} First, he adoptsadopted the identity Spirit and roundsrounded up new arrivals and convincesconvinced them to join him and work inon rebuilding the city. After rumors spread that those surrounding Raoden no longer felt much pain andor hunger, many arewere attracteddrawn to the Elantrian. He later bringsbrought some semblance of order to the city did by bringing together the two separateopposing factions led by [[Karata]] and [[Aanden]], and allocatingproviding resources to the Elantrians. Despite his own suffering, Raoden managesmanaged to restore a sense of purpose and hope to the Elantrians by assigning them individual jobs and assignments so they could better their once -glorious city.

In an attempt to better the lives of the Elantrians, Sarene bringsbrought food to the Elantris. There Raoden meetsmet Sarene under the guise of Spirit but only he recognizesrecognized the Teoish princess while she believesbelieved him to be just a common Elantrian. Karata and Mareshe, posing as the leadinghead Elantrians, agreeagreed to allow Sarene and the other nobles to distribute food to the people inif exchangethey foralso provided various goods, theywhich the Elantrians would later use to make clothing and some repairs to the city. Sarene suspectssuspected that Raoden as Spirit iswas the ruler of the Elantris and latereventually gainsstarted trustto intrust him.

As Raoden and Galladon discussdiscussed AonDor, Galladon suggestssuggested that the land has changed, causing Raoden to concluderealize that the chasm innear Elantris had caused the Reod, rather than the other way around as speculatedmost people believed. Raoden drawsdrew a modified Aon Ehe Aonthat includngincluded a line for the chasm line, and ita works,massive causingstream aof fireballfire toexploded incineratefrom it and incinerated part of the library. TheyWith realizefurther experimentation, Galladon and Raoden determined that the AonDor iswas still somewhat inhibited and the strong burst of power was athe result of a large reserve of energy being releaesedreleased at once. TheirFurther Aons dondidn't produce effects as powerful effects as the books describedescribed, orany affectAons peoplethat targeted each other didn't work at all, and they still havehad not completedbecome theirlike transformations tothe pre-Reod Elantrians. However, they arewere able to use athe bitAonDor ofto thesome AonDordegree. RaodenFor doesinstance, findRaoden crafted a practicalhandy aonAon, based on Shao, that allowsallowed him to create an illusion around him of a healthy human, to makemaking it possible for them to leave Elantris.

Under the guise of exiled Dulas, Raoden and Galladon enterentered Arelon and meetsmet with Sarene and her allies. Suspecting the newcomer to be a spy, Sarene sparssparred with Raoden and accidentally woundswounded him, adding to the many pains he already sufferssuffered. He eventually revealsrevealed his identity as Spirit to Sarene and sharesshared his reconnection to the Dor. While attendingDuring a meeting at [[Kiin]]'s house, Count [[TelriiAhan]] betraysbetrayed them andto killsKing [[RoialTelrii]], andwho attemptshad toDuke do[[Roial]] sokilled toand ordered the restexecution of the noblesothers. InOn athe spur of the moment, Raoden dropsdropped one illusion andto revealsreveal another, one of his appearance before being taken by the Shaod. Telrii fleesfled and Sarene and the other noblesothers are shocked by the revelation. Raoden attemptsattempted to heal Roial but fails to do sofailed due to his lack of knowledge of the healing Aons as well asand the lackblockage of powerthe Dor. With news of his return, hisRaoden's coronation iswas scheduled;, but while giving his speech,speaking his illusion dropsdropped and his status as an Elantrian iswas revealed to the citizens. Sarene managesmanaged to calm the crowd and they acceptaccepted Raoden as an Elantrianking despite his appearance.

WhenWhile Elantris iswas under attack by Wyrn's army, Raoden eventually discoversdiscovered the key to restoring Elantris after realizing that Elantris and its surrounding cities are justformed one bigmassive Aon. He then drawsdrew a giant line to represent the fissurechasm that caused the interruptionReod, infixing the ShaodDor and manages to completecompleting the Shaod ofin all theliving Elantrians. HeThe laterhealed succeeds inElantrians repellingrepelled the effortsattacks of [[Wyrn]] in conquering both [[Arelon]] and [[Teod]].{{book ref|Elantris|61}}{{book ref|Elantris|62}} The book ends with Raoden finally restoringrestored Elantris and becomingfrom theit ruler ofrules both the restored city and Arelon.
