Unlike many of the Bridge Four members, Lopen did not hide a dark past. He was not sent to the bridge crews because of a crime, but only because he was a nuisance.{{wob ref\|8259\|Oathbringer Release Party\|date=2017/11/13}} As he was a Herdazian slave, it was likely the racist attitude of Alethi society that enabled this unjust treatment. While recruiting for [[Bridge Four]] one day, [[Kaladin]] was moved to choose Lopen, who was the only person among the newcomers who did not have a defeated look of apathy on his face, and the only one volunteering to be picked, despite being of little apparent use. ItLater ~~turned~~it would turn out that Lopen was clueless about bridge crews, and wanted to be picked simply because it made him feel special.{{book ref\|sa1\|32}} AsConsidering Lopen's ~~would~~physical ~~be of little use when carrying the bridge~~limitation, Kaladin assigned him to carry water for the crew during bridge runs. Lopen also carried medical equipment and other items for Kaladin later on, ~~along~~accompanied ~~with~~by [[Dabbid]] and others who could not help carry the bridge. Eventually he learned medical first aid from Kaladin and was given medic duties as well.{{book ref\|sa1\|68}} During the [[Battle of the Tower]], while unable to fight, Lopen helped by ensuring that Kaladin always had a spear in hand. He did this by taking spears from fallen Alethi soldiers and tossing one to Kaladin when needed.{{book ref\|sa1\|68}}
