Lirin was a darkeyed Alethi surgeon and citizen of the second nahn in the town of Hearthstone on Roshar.

Personality and history
Kaladin and Tien were his sons and he was married to Hesina. The other townspeople felt uncomfortable around Lirin and his family because Lirin was looking into people (though they came when they were ill or had injuries) and spent a lot of time with books. Lirin also taught Kaladin that the life of a person is priceless. He didn't charge for his work but the families of his patients brought donations to thank him.

When citylord Brightlord Wistiow died, Lirin received a lot of diamond broams that he should use for Kaladin's education. Later there were rumors that Lirin stole the spheres. Eventually some of the townsmen tried to take the spheres but Lirin persuaded them to leave. The new citylord, Roshone, worked against Lirin from day one. Though he had no legal possibility to get the spheres, his comments caused the townspeople to stop giving donations and overcharge for their own goods, which made Lirin's family destitute. In order to deceive Roshone into thinking his family was worse off than they were, Lirin occasionally spent the spheres. Eventually Brightlord Amaram came to town for recruiting new soldiers. Lirin thought that they were safe because they are of the second nahn and his and Kaladin's work as surgeons is vital. But Roshone, who could decide who has to join the army, sent Tien away, as he was not vital to the city. When Kaladin decided to follow Tien in order to protect him, Lirin and Hesina cried, defenselessly, as they lost both sons on this day.

Surgery and teaching
Kaladin was instructed by Lirin in the work of a surgeon and showed a great genius in this work. So Lirin thought Kaladin to go to Kharbranth when he reaches his sixteenth weeping to proceed learning with real scholars and become a better surgeon. Lirin himself got his education by Vathe in the nearest town to Hearthstone. Lirin's ancestors brought his family to the second nahn which included full citizenship and the right of travel. So he told Kaladin that he should not waste his life becoming a soldier but use this lucky chance to go to Kharbranth.

While instructing Kaladin Lirin told him about the necessitate to always wash hands before doing surgery work. When Kaladin complained Lirin told him that this wisdom came from the Heralds who had been sent to teach mankind.
