By the time of her appearance, Kaza has begun showing the effects of being a Soulcasting savant, to the point "where her disfigurements [a]re starkly obvious": parts of her body are turning into smoke, and she estimates that, optimistically, she has a year or two to live.

Her condition has also caused her to lose familiarity with aspects of human behavior. When [[Droz]], a sailor on the ship, speaks to her, she has to consciously remind herself of reasons why someone might do such a thing. The ship's cook later describes her as "barely human anymore", and she resists the cook's poison much longer than everyone else on the ship.
