Early Life (1153–1168)
Childhood
Kaladin was born in late 1153 to his father Lirin, a surgeon, and mother Hesina in the town of Hearthstone in the Sadeas princedom. Two years later, his younger brother Tien is born. His entire family is of the second nahn, which outranks the other inhabitants of the town, who are mostly of fourth and fifth nahn. Due to this rank disparity and the superstitions surrounding his father's work, Kaladin grows up mostly in isolation. As a result, he is very close with his brother and, after being encouraged by his family, becomes friends with Laral Wistiow, the daughter of the citylord. HeAs a youth, he dislikes his name "Kaladin" because he thinks that it is a lighteyes name; instead he goes by "Kal." When he reaches age eight, his father starts training Kaladin in surgery. Kaladin is talented and learns quickly.

AlthoughThe Kaladintwo immediately went to wash his hands, he answered his father by saying that he'd heard that the Heralds were demons from an ardent.
