Hrathen initially has an antagonistic relationship with Sarene. As Hrathen tries to paint the Elantrians as "svrakis" or devils, Sarene uses her period of mourning to work with the Arelish nobility and provide gifts and food for the Elantrians{{citebook ref|elantris|20}}. Over time, Hrathen comes to respect Sarene for her skill of witpolitics.{{citebook ref|elantris|54}} He eventually decides to poison Sarene in order to remove her from the equation and end her constant interferinginterference inwith his plans.{{citebook ref|elantris|39}} Later he realizes that he loves Sarene and saves both Sareneher and [[Raoden]] from [[Dilaf]], dying in the process.{{book ref|elantris|62}} As a result of his bravery, Sarene request that he be buried outside Elantris with the others who are honored as heroes.{{citebook ref|Elantris|epilouge}}
