Balat is a young man twenty-three years old as of {{Rosharan date|1173}}. He has a round face and a haunted look that shadowed him. {{book ref|sa3|122}} He is the tallest among his surviving siblings.
 
It is inferred that as a boy, he liked starting fires. One of these almost burned down the servants building. {{book ref|sa2|27}} He is also known to have cruel habits towards animals, it’s likely he abused and possibly killed an [[axehound]] pup that his older brother [[Helaran]] gave him as a gift.{{book ref|sa2|19}}
His father smashed his poker against Balat’s leg on a fight and caused him an injury that left him walking with a cane. {{book ref|sa2|73}}
 
As an adult he still liked killing animals, not people. Never people. The pain on whatever he killed seemed to ease up his own pain. He did so with cruelty, enjoying each step. An example is ripping legs of a small crab one by one.{{book ref|sa1|i|2}}
He has a history of cruelty, violence, and destructive tendencies. As a child, he sets fire to the servants' quarters, almost burning down the entire building,{{book ref|sa2|27}} and abuses, possibly killing, an [[axehound]] pup that his older brother [[Helaran]] gives him as a gift.{{book ref|sa2|19}} As an adult, he still regularly tortures and kills animals, such as ripping the legs off of small crabs.{{book ref|sa1|i|2}} Balat enjoys killing animals, finding it satisfying and a way to "keep [his] sanity".{{book ref|sa1|i|2}}
