===Appearance===
Hesina is a pretty darkeyed woman, with full lips, a narrow face and a bold chin.{{book ref|sa1|10}} She is tall and stands several fingers above her husband.{{book ref|sa3|6}} She has dark hair that is usually in a tail and wrapped in a kerchief.{{book ref|sa1|25}} Hesina often wears brown clothing, sometimes with a hint of color.{{book ref|sa1|25}}{{book ref|sa1|37}} During the colder months, she wears a knitted hat over her kerchief and a long brown coat to keep warm.{{book ref|sa1|25}} She covers her safe hand with a glove as it is more practical.{{book ref|sa1|6}}

Hesina is quick witted and sharp tongued.{{book ref|sa1|25}} During his youth, Hesina would often banter with her son, Kaladin, who had inherited her tendency towards clever word play.{{book ref|sa1|25}} She is open minded{{book ref|sa1|44}} and wishes for her children to have a choice over their future [[Calling]]s.{{book ref|sa1|44}}
While her exact birthplace and parents are unknown, we do know that at least one of her parent's was a [[lighteyes]]{{wob ref|9290}} and she had definitely fallen in social standing since her childhood.{{wob ref|1335}} She likely did this to be with Lirin. When Lirin met her parents it went very badly.▼
 
Unlike the other mothers in the Hearthstone, Hesina rarely chastises her sons for odd behaviour and sometimes joins them.{{book ref|sa1|44}}

She is also known for her cleverness with words, and often banters with Kaladin. Lirin says once that Kaladin inherited some of that banter.
===Beliefs===
While not a surgeon like Lirin, she will occasionally help him with basic work like boiling bandages. When Lirin is helping heal citizens after the Everstorm, she works as his assistant the way Kaladin used to.

Hesina follows the [[Vorin]] religion and is more religious that her husband.{{cite}} She has faith in the power [[glyphward]]s, often burning them for her family or giving them to her sons.{{book ref|sa1|17}} She has a preference for simple glyphs.{{book ref|sa1|62}}
 
Hesina believes that all things, with the exception of people, have a [[spren]] living within them.{{book ref|sa1|37}} When objects such as food are consumed, the spren within them are freed to return to their home.{{book ref|sa1|37}} People, by contrast, have souls instead of spren, however, Hesina believes that small spren can reside in parts of the body.{{book ref|sa1|37}} This thought is echoed by [[Syl]], when she informs Kaladin that at least half of the spears he has used have been female.{{book ref|sa3|7}}

While not a surgeon like her husband, Hesina will occasionally assist Lirin with his surgeries. Her role in her husbands work diminishes as Lirin takes on apprentices, first Kaladin, then [[Mara]], however, Hesina occasionally assists if multiple helpers are required.{{book ref|sa1|41}}{{book ref|sa3|6}}
 
Hesina is able to both read and write in the Alethi [[Women's script]]. She is the only women in Hearthstone who is able to read, though this skill isn’t uncommon amongst higher ranking darkeyed women.{{book ref|sa1|31}}
