At the age of seven he witnesses his [[Tanalan's father|father]] die at the hands of [[Dalinar]] Kholin. Dalinar had been given orders by his brother [[Gavilar[[]] to also kill Tanalan, however, Dalinar instead lets him and his mother escape. Nine years later, Tanalan returns to Rathalas to take his place as city lord. He demands the return of his fathers [[shardblade]], [[Oathbringer (shadebladeShardblade)|Oathbringer]] and heads the rebellion of the city against the Kholin regime.
