Brandon had always plannedclaimed forthat the Alcatraz series was to consist of five books, Scholastic,and that the original publisher, howeverScholastic, had only bought the first four. For a variety of reasons, includingSince Scholastic beingwould unwilling to make anot contract for the fifth book, Brandon bought back the rights in early 2013.{{bws ref|state-of-the-sanderson|State of the Sanderson|date=Jul 24th, 2013}} He later re-sold the series, including book 5, to Tor.{{qa ref|1052|18|When is the next Alcatraz book coming out?|date=March 21st, 2014}}
 
In reality, there was always a sixth book planned. Tor was one of the publishers willing to promote the five-book series with the grand reveal at the end: that there would actually be a sixth book, written from another character's perspective.
