Because he can't carry a bridge due to his missing arm, Kaladin tells him to gather some water and accompany Bridge Four on the very next bridge run, so Lopen takes [[Dabbid]] and [[Hobber]] and they carry water for the bridgemen. Since [[Gaz]] seemed to have no issues with this the first time, Lopen and Dabbid continue bringing water on every following bridge run.
He often makes fun of himself (he has many "one armed Herdazian jokes") and laughs frequently, despite being in one of the worst situations possible, showing his extremely optimistic
He is always fascinated when Kaladin absorbs [[Stormlight]], and says that women would love him if he learned to "glow" like Kaladin. He repeatedly attempts to [[Invest]] Stormlight from gemstones, and eventually succeeds. He uses it to restore his missing arm. {{book ref|sa2|87}}
