Kenton has lived much of his life challenging authority. He has done it so often that he sometimes instinctively challenges others for the sole purpose of challenging authority, without a greater goal in mind.

=== Early Life ===
Kenton was the youngest son of Lord Mastrell [[Praxton]]. Despite having little talent in Sand Mastery, he insisted on joining the [[Diem]], as the law said he could.{{book ref|ws1|1}}
=== Acolent ===
As an acolent, Kenton refused the position of underfen four times. He did not want to be frozen in that position forever. He insisted on running the [[Mastrell's Path]] to prove that he could do anything a Mastrell could do. While on it he killed the [[sandling]] and ruined the path forever,{{book ref|ws1|1}}
When Kenton refuses the rank of underfen again, his father agrees to grant him the title of Mastrell.{{book ref|ws1|2}}
=== Battle Against Kerztians ===
After the Kerztains attacked the Sand Masters, Kenton believed himself to be the only survivor.{{book ref|ws1|3}} He traveled with [[Khriss]] and her companions to th e city of [[Kezare]]. He learned that there were other survivors of the attack.{{book ref|ws1|4}}
He became the acting Lord Mastrell.{{book ref|ws1|5}}
