Se pueden enchufar varios aparatos a la máquina. Esto incluye un aparato de detección, con una aguja que apunta hacia espíritus cercanos,{{book ref|yumi|23}} un aparato de captura para atrapar dichos espíritus,{{book ref|yumi|23}} y un aparato para cortar Conexión, el cual se usó para separar a Yumi y [[Nikaro]].{{book ref|yumi|34}}

Los académicos de la universidad de [[ciudad Torio]] trabajaron para crear una máquina capaz de usar a los haijo de la región para producir una fuente de poder. Su anterior prototipo era capaz de crear pilas de rocas simples las cuales eran suficientes para atraer espíritus a un ritmo lento pero consistente. Una parte del alma de los espíritus era absorbida por la máquina para poder seguir funcionando continuamente y para permitir el funcionamiento de otros aparatos auxiliares. Esta invención terminó llevando al desenvolupamiento de la máquina padre, la cual era mucho más grande y capaz de producir líneas de hion.{{book ref|yumi|39}} La máquina fue activada por [[Gyundok]] y su equipo de académicos cuando Yumi tenía diecinueve años, durante el [[Festival de las Revelaciones]].Debido a una negligencia en las instruciones que se le dieron a la máquina, antes de atraer a los haijo hacia sí, la máquina tomó las almas de los humanos en su lugar. Consumió a casi toda la gente de Torio, los únicos que se salvaron fueron la gente nómada de las partes más periféricas del reino, intentando accelerar su misión. Esto creó la mortaja-- una miasma negra de Investidura deshechada que se quedó en la superficie del planeta. Más tarde, la máquina pasó a funcionar usando los haijo, y con el tiempo creó los cabos de hion que brotaron del suelo dando luz a las villas de alrededor.{{book ref|yumi|39}}
Scholars of the [[Torio City]] university worked to create a machine capable of using the hijo of the region to produce a power source. Their early prototype was capable of creating simple rock stacks which were adequate to attract spirits at a low but consistent rate. A portion of the spirits' souls could be siphoned off by the machine to allow continued operation and to power auxiliary devices. This invention eventually led to the development of the father machine, which was significantly larger and capable of producing hion lines.{{book ref|yumi|39}}
The machine was activated by [[Gyundok]] and his team of scholars when Yumi was nineteen years old, at the [[Festival of Reveals]]. Due to an oversight in the instructions given to the machine, before working to draw the hijo to itself it the machine seized the souls of the humans instead. It consumed nearly all of the Torish people, sparing only the more distant nomadic peoples at the kingdom's outskirts, in order to jumpstart its mission. This created the shroud--a black miasma of wasted Investiture which settled over the planet. The machine subsequently converted to powering itself by means of the hijo, and eventually created hion stubs which grew from the ground out of a burst of light in surrounding villages.{{book ref|yumi|39}}
 
The yoki-hijo's souls were too powerful for the machine to permanently destroy. To protect itself from them, the machine set up prisons for these women in the form of fake towns. By altering their memories on a daily basis, it was able to keep these powerful beings unaware of their imprisonment.{{book ref|yumi|39}}
