Soon Peg takes complete control of the base, and Peg’s sons go to secure threats on the base. Peg orders the pirates not to loot, as Surehold will be their new base. Spensa tries to find her father’s pin, which is somewhere on Surehold. Spensa tells Chet about the delver’s offer of a truce. It would mean not finishing the last step on the Path of Elders. Spensa asks Chet what he thinks. Chet is uncertain, but suggests that maybe Spensa could come with him and explore the nowhere. He offers Spensa the option of spending an eternity exploring an entire galaxy, teaching each other. Spensa finds the offer tempting, but is uncertain, thinking of her friends back on Detritus. Peg arrives, and tells Spensa that she could stay with the Broadsiders, and would be welcome. Spensa decides she needs time to think of it, and so she finds a bed and goes to sleep.
