The specific nature of the orb's power is unclear. It was technically created using a known magic system,{{wob ref|4550}} andalthough its particular manifestation of the magic has not been seen before.{{wob ref|1561}} It may have involved "distilling" [[Investiture]] in some way.{{wob ref|9513}} Kelsier notes that the liquid inside the orb bears some similarities to a glowing liquid that the Ire drink, although it is much brighter.{{msh ref|5|3}} [[Hoid]] also applies a similar liquid{{wob ref|200}} made of Investiture{{wob ref|1542}} to his oar while traveling through the Cognitive Realm.{{msh ref|2|1}} The Ire are ancient and highly cosmere-aware,{{wob ref|5783}} but they may not have been fully prepared for the effects of the orb.{{wob ref|11820}}
