Dirk is the nephew of the duke of Diggen's Point and is appointed as the duke's heir on Lumar following the capture of Charlie by the Sorceress.
Dirk is six and a half feet tall, incredibly muscular, and is approximately the same age as Charlie.
Upon the duke's return from his voyage with Charlie to find him a suitable princess to wed,[2] Dirk is introduced as his heir in place of Charlie, with the princess of Dormancy as his wife. The duke claims that, after the loss of Charlie to the Sorceress, he was forced to adopt Dirk and appoint him as his heir, an event which took place within hours of the duke learning that Charlie's ship had vanished.[1]
Dirk is introduced to the citizens of Diggen's Point by the duke as an "excellent fencer" and a "war hero", having lost ten thousand men in the Battle of Lakeprivy. The townspeople are coerced into celebrating his marriage to the princess.[1]
