About Earth in the Cosmere

Hello. I am afraid you are mistaken; the line in Elantris is: "It had come with a tempest—that much even Raoden remembered. The earth itself had shattered." The capitalization of the word earth in that matters, so clearly this line is just generically using "earth" for "the ground." This is not really that uncommon a turn of phrase. You are also mistaken, and there is very consistent evidence for the fact that the planet Earth is not in the cosmere. See on Arcanum for many many quotes on this: [1]

Additionally, edits must be written in an encyclopedic way. If you would like to dispute something, use {{disputed}}.

For these reasons, I have reverted your edits. My apologies! -- Chaos2651 (talk) 17:45, 23 June 2018 (MST)

No apologies needed and thanks for the tips.

If "Earth" didn't exist in the Cosmere there would be no use for the word in the universe, period. In short if there is no Earth why would the ground be considered earth. Earth being used in the generic sense of "ground" etc... shouldn't exist in a Universe that has no Earth in the universe, the word "earth" would be unknown. Earth is definitively a name which can be used in other ways, our home planets name, the earth we walk on, etc.... But without something called Earth in the universe no one would use it in such a way. Mistake or otherwise, Earth/earth exists in the Cosmere.

There are so many alternatives to describe this assertion, for instance: Roshar, Sel etc... could be used to describe ground, planet, world

Would you go to Roshar or Sel or whatever and say? - "It had come with a tempest—that much even Raoden remembered. The earth itself had shattered" Heck no. You would say Roshar or the ground of Sel, or whatever had shattered. The fact is Earth is a very specific name of a planet. Whithout it's existence in the Cosmere it just doesn't exist in any form, but it does.

Unfortunately for you, the word "earth" and "earthquake" are mentioned in various books in this way (used in this way in nearly every Brandon book, in fact). Have you not read books, watched movies, or played video games that are not at all set on Earth where they use it in this context? I'm sorry, but this is just very common in the genre and you don't seem familiar with this convention or definition of the word. I even looked at some dictionaries and "the ground" is always one such usage (for example, Meriam-Webster definition 3 [2]), so even outside of fantasy, this is a completely acceptable context. Sorry this didn't work for you. But again, we're reading the books in translation.[3] I think you must surely agree that an author writing fantasy shouldn't prevent themselves from using the word "earthquake" for example, right? That's just unnecessarily clunky if one couldn't use that word if you were a writer. Also please don't delete stuff on talk pages, you can use a : for an indent. We want to preserve the conversation for others to see. Thank you. -- Chaos2651 (talk) 19:41, 23 June 2018 (MST)
